Guest guest
Dear BhakthAs: A friend of mine and a native of a village near Kooram has checked and advised that the Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar , the author of Sudarsana Sathakam is a contemproary of KurEsar and Bhattar. He is considered thus to be of a different time frame (much earlier )than Swamy Desikan's time. He seems to be known by the name of Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar of Srirangam . The AdayAr Library manuscripts however give the date of 1459 A.D for the Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar and comments that He is a follower of Swamy Desikan and has given us the famous work , " Sudarsana Sathakam " . He is also linked with commentaries on MaandUkya Upanishad , TaittirIya Upanishad and IsAvAsyOpanishad. The references to his living in Post-Deskan era are : Sudarsana Sathakam : Adayar D.X . Intro. P.XV;HCSL. P281 ( author of Sudarsana Sathakam ); Adayar Library Publication, 1966 . His authorship of IsAvAsyOpanishad: Potter, Poona Sanskrit Series , 1921. His authorship of TaitthirIya Upanishad: Saasthra MukthAvaLi Series: Series of Books edited by P.B.AnantAchArya , Kaanchi Vol 24, 1905. His authorship of MaaNDUkya Upanishad: Potter , AnandAsrama Sanskrit Series: Vol 62: PP 244-418,1910. In summary , There seem to be two Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyars, one who lived during KurEsA's time and the other after Swamy Desikan's time. I welcome the input form Sri K.M.Narayanan that Sri Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar was a contemproary of KurEsar. My thanks to him for sharing his insights as a native of a village near Kooram. I am still confused by the references and links of Sudarsana Sathakam to the other Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar. We know that Swamy Desikan was very fond of IsAvAsyOpanishad and wrote a commentary on it . I am not sure whether " the Srirangam KooranArAyaNa Jeeyar " wrote any commentaries on the Upanishads including IsOpanishad. Additional comments are welcome in a spirit of research. Those who have access to AdayAr Libraray can check on this matter to clear the air on authorship of SudarsanAshtakam .If nothing is unearthed , let us attribute the SudarsanAshtakam (about the Sudarsana Moorthy of Kaanchi or Srirangam ) to the elder Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar! Guest guest
SrI: SrI Lakshminrusimha ParabramhaNE namaH SrI nArAyaNa yateendra mahAdESikAya namaH namO nArAyaNa! Dear SrI Sadagopan, Thanks for your inputs from the " History of ViSishTAdvaita Literature " by SrI VKSN Raghavan of VaishNavism Dept,University of Madras, wherein references to the Adayar Library etc sources has been cited. Sorry for this belated reply ...meant to write on this much earlier. The two KUra-nArAyaNa JIyars are different. The author of SudarSaNa-Satakam is a disciple of SrI KUratAzhwAn/SrI ParASara Bhattar. The author of ISAvAsyOpanishad BhAshyam belongs to the post-SwAmi Desika Period. But, this JIyar is not the author of few other Upanishad BhAshyams which also carries the author name as " KUra-nArAyaNa JIyar " . SrI UtthamUr SwAmi has done some research analysis on this issue, in his edition on ISAvAsyopanishad with the commentaries of SwAmi DESikan and SrI KUra-NArAyaNa JIyar, dated 1948. SwAmi takes into account the Adayar Manuscript resources. After careful analysis and ruling out many possibilities, SwAmi concludes that it is the 22nd HH JIyar of SrI Ahobila Muth who authored the ISavAsyopanishad BhAshyam in hand. There is a small confusion as to whether it is 12th HH JIyar of SrI Ahobila Muth. SrI PuttUr SwAmi in his Tamil exposition on ISAvAsyopanishad (mainly spelling out the essentials esp from the bhAshyam of a thennAchArya, SrI PuriSai Ra~ngAchArya (*) ) cites SrI UtthamUr SwAmi's edition/analysis and says - It has been concluded there by SrI UtthamUr SwAmi that the author is 12th HH JIyar of SrI Ahobila Muth. aDiyEn will write more on this later and briefly stating the analysis of SrI UtthamUr SwAmi (Haven't read it completly until now ...Will gothrough it soon). (*): SrI PuriSai Ra~ngAchArya (SPR) was a well accomplished thenkalai scholar belonging to the later 19th Century and begining of 20th Century. SrI InjimEttu Azhagiyasi~ngar in his pUrvAshramam learnt many texts of NyAya SAstra under him. SPR wrote a bhAshyam to ISAvAsyopanishad which has its speciality in criticizing the view-points of advaita - The highlighting feature of this BhAshyam. But alongside, SwAmi DESikan's BhAshyam has also been criticized. Well, SrI " Abhinava DESika " UtthamUr SwAmi has written a highly scholarly refuttal to SPR's bhAshyam to establish the soundness of SwAmi DESikan's bhAshyam. This work named " AchArya-BhAshya-TAtparyaH " involves lot of polemics drawing profuse usage of PUrva-MImAmsa {and also VyAkaraNa (Skt Grammar) wherever needed} to establish SrI VEdAnta DESika's interpretation to be perfect and thereby refuting all the criticisms levelled against it. It is filled with many hair spliiting arguments. What struck aDiyEn the most was the detailed argument on " antarvyApti vichAra " in mantra 5 - It runs for " many.... " pages. This original creation - a quite detailed bhAshyam- by the genius abhinava dESika was extremly admired by SrI InjimEttu Azhagiyasingar for its amazing insights. BTW, for one to have a hand on this commentary, he must make sure that he is very good in PUrva-MImAmsa, Uttara-MImAmsa and VyAkaraNa !! Some NyAya SAstra based parishkArAs are also used by SwAmi which begs the understanding of Navya-NyAya also ! Basically, a Chatur-SAstra VidvAn can understand the flow of all the arguments without much of scratching the head. aDiyEn rAmAnuja dAsan, anantapadmanAbhan. > Dear BhakthAs: > > A friend of mine and a native of a village > near Kooram has checked and advised that > the Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar , the author of > Sudarsana Sathakam is a contemproary of KurEsar > and Bhattar.
