Dear Sri VaradarAja BhakthAs:

In the third slOkam , KurEsar salutes

the self-manifested Param JyOthi ,

Sri VaradarAjan ,who appeared before

His son , Chathurmukha BrahmA at the time

of PrAtha: Savanam (Morning offerings of

Havis ) for the AsvamEdha Yaagam

performed on top of the Hasthi Giri.

The Third slOkam presented in front

of AchArya RaamAnuja and Lord VaradarAjA

by KurEsar takes this form:

nithyam indhriyapaTAthigam mahO-

yOginAmapi sudhUragam dhiya:

apyanusravasirassu dhurgraham

prAdhurasthi karisailamasthakE

(Meaning ): A matchless ParamjyOthi has

manifested as a a result of its own sankalpam

on the top of Hasthi Giri and stays there for

all times(for the KshEmam of the Universe).

This Svayam-Vyaktha PeraruLALa ParamjyOthi

is beyond the comprehension of the senses

(Karma and Jn~Ana IndhriyAs);this JyOthi

is beyond the grasp of blessed intellects

like Sage ParAsarar and others, who are adept

in the practise of Bhakthi Yogam . The nature and

the attributes of this Param JyOthi can not be

understood or described by the Siras of VedhAs

(viz)., The Upanishads.

The key words here are: " Maha: Kari Saila masthakE

nithyam prAdhurasthi " (i.e)., A great JyOthi has

manifested itself for all times on the top of

the Hasthi Giri. Swamy Desikan will be using later

the word " prAdhurasthi " verbatim in his Hasthi Giri

MahAthmyam out of reverence to KurEsar.

The Self-manifested Radiant JyOthi

**********************************

What is this radiant effulgence , which has no match?

This radiant svayam-JyOthi is Lord VaradarAjan , who

appeared form the Hooma Kuntam as Brahma performed

VapA homam . He appeared to accept the Havis directly

at that asvamEdha yaagam done by BrahmA with his Devis.

Swamy Desikan describes that param JyOthi as " Param Sudar "

that surpassed the luminosity of thousand crores of Suns

( " aayiram kOti AadhithyarkaL utthitthArp pOlE " ).That

indescribable JyOthi manifested itself in the middle

of the Utthara Vedhi /Agni Kuntam ( " Utthara vEdhi

maddhyatthil oru MahA tEjas thOnRiRRu " ). That JyOthi

presented itself so that all can offer worship at its

sacred feet resting on the top of the Hasth Giri

( " Yaavarum vanthu adi VaNanga Yaanai mEl meethu

uLLathE " ...Swamy Desikan ).

This incomparable radiance appeared on top of

the Hasthi Giri (Elephant Hill ) with the PuNya

kOti VimAnam resembling a golden mountain and

the Suryan at that time looked like the insignificant

radiance of a lamp lit in day time ( " pahalOn pahal

ViLakkAhap Paramsudar ThOnRiyathE " ).

Swamy Desikan's description of the Param JyOthi

*************************************************

Swamy Desikan describes the appearance of

Lord VaradarAjan during the month of Chitthirai

Sunday , when the Hastha Nakshathram was in

ascendance during the prAtha: savana kaalam ,

when BrahmA performed VapA Homam . He manifested

infront of all the Rthviks and the YajamAnan (Brahmaa)

in the middle of the Utthara Vedhi Agni Kuntam :

" ChaithrE maasi sithE pakshE chathurdasyAm tiThou MunE

sObhanE HASTHA NAKSHATHRE Ravi Vaara samanvithE

VapA hOmE pravrutthE thu praatha: savana kaalikE

DhAthu: utthara-vEdhyantha: praadhurAth JanArdhana: "

-- Sri Hasthi Giri MahAthmyam SlOkam :15 th section

Swamy Desikan goes on to celebrate the self-manifestation

of Lord VaradarAjan on top of Hasthi Giri further:

SaraNya: SarvalOkAnAm NAARAYANA upAgatha:

Sankha-Chakra GadhApANI: NAARAYANA upAgatha:

(meaning): Sriman NaarAyaNan , the refuge for all

the worlds has arrived. Lord NaarAyaNan adorning

Sudarshana Chakram , Paanchajanya Sankham and

KoumEdhaki mace has arrived on top of Hasthi Giri.

Swamy Desikan continues with the celebration of

the appearance of Lord VaradarAjan in Hasthi Giri

MahAthmyam:

Perumaiudayi Atthigiri PerumAL VanthAr

pErAthu aruL pozhiyum PerumAL vanthAr

arumaRayin ucchitanil ninRAr vanthAr

angamudan avai aahum PeriyOr vanthAr.

(meaning): The Hasthigiri Lord of infinite fame

has appeared . The Lord with never-ceasing mercy

has appeared . The Lord , who stands on the peak

of Vedham (VedhAntham ) has arrived . He has appeared

with the angams (six limbs ) of the Vedhams.

ThiruvurayAit thAmm poruLAi niRpAr vanthAr

ThiruvaruLAl Sezhum kalaikaL tanthAr vanthAr

maruvilarkku mayakkuraikkum MaayOn VanthAr

vAnERa Vazhi tanthAr vanthAr thAmE

(meaning): That Lord who stands as the meaning

(artham ) for the PirAtti , who stays as Sabdha

Svaroopam has arrived. That Lord , who has blessed us

with noble Saasthrams out of His compassion for us

has arrived. That mysterious one , who instructs

mohAna saasthrams ( misguiding saasthrams)for

the non-believers (naasthikAs) has manifested Himself.

This great Lord , who performed the upadEsam

for us on how to ascend the ladder to His supreme

abode , Sri Vaikuntam has indeed appeared on

top of the Hasthi Giri for all to worship.

In the next posting , adiyEn will focus on

the other sections of the third slOkam and

include Sri SVS Swamy's commentary.
