Guest guest
Dear Bhagavathas: Reckoning the correct date for Uparkama is important. It needs to be calculated correctly. Srimad Azhagiya Singar has given a nirnayam that we need to adjust for the time difference and not simply follow the panjangam set for India. This has to be properly calculated for each time zone/country. Here is my calculation based on the Pambu Panjangam. Sun rise at Thanjavur: 6:05 a.m. Aug 3 (Friday) Chaturdasi lasts for 9.44 nazghigai Pornami begins at 6:05 a.m. + 9.44 nazhigai = 9:51 a.m. In Eastern Time zone = 7:21 p.m. (Aug 2nd) Aug 4 (Saturday) Powrnami lasts for 13.58 nazhigai Pradhamai begins at 6:05 a.m. + 13.58 nazhigai = 11:30 a.m. In Eastern Time zone = 9:00 p.m. (Aug 3rd) Thus, in US Eastern time zone Pornami lasts all day on August 3rd and there is no Powrnami on Pradahami at all. So is the case for all the four time zones in the U.S. Therefore, Yajur Upakarma must be done on Friday Aug 3rd. Then, Gayathri Japam must be done on Saturday, Aug 4th. Where as, in Thanjavur, Powrnami lasts till 11:30 a.m. on Pradamani thithi, (for 13.58 nazhigai) and therefore there is a difference. Make your computations for your time zone and make sure you do not have more than 12 nazhigai of Powrnami on Pradhamai thithi in your area. If it does you have do more compoutations to be sure. Consult with your Acharya at home. Similar computation must be done for the observance of Ekadasi Vradham and Dwadasi paranai. The rule here is, if Ekadasi present after Arunodaym, about 4 nazhigai before sun rise, then that is the day for Ekadasi vradham. One more important point: During Sankalpam the name of the year is " Vrushu " NOT " Vishu " . Thank you, -- adiyEn p.s. Thanks to Sri Mani Varadarajan for reminding everyone of the difference between India and U.S. in this regard.
