Guest guest
Dear BhakthAs and AbhimAnis of Sri Matam : A question came up from an erudite reader regarding the links between the HH The 43rd Azhagiya Singar's family and its links to other Azhagiya Singars . I had commented : " It is all in the Family " some what lightly. What I had in mind needs a little elaboration : 1) The 27th pattam Azhagiya Singar: Sri VeerarAghava YathIndhra MahA Desikan (AasthAnam : October 1 , 1829 to August 17, 1831).This Jeeyar is the son of HH The 26th Azhagiya Singar , Sri RanganAtha YathIndhra MahA Desikan (AasthAnam : Nov 21, 1811 to October 12, 1828). At the time of His ascent to Sri Vaikuntam on August 17, 1831 HH The 27th pattam Azhagiya Singar asked the GaddhavAL RaajA , His dear Sishyan to help select His successor. For an year and 11 months after HH The 27th Azhagiya Singar's ascent to Sri Vaikuntam , there were no candidates for the Peetam. Now , coming back to HH The 27th pattam Jeeyar , He had in His poorvAsramam a daughter by name SrirangammA .She had no issues and adopted in her fifties Partthipattu ThiruvEnkatAcchAr , who would become the father of HH The 43rd Jeeyar later. When SrirangammA brought ThiruvEnkatAchAr as a boy for Pancha samskAram to the then reigning Atthippattu Azhagiya Singar ( HH The 34th Jeeyar, Sri SatakOpa RaamAnuja YathIndhra MahA Desikan /AasthAnam : 1879-1882), latter blessed the boy ThiruvEnkadAcchAr with SamAsraYaNam; The Jeeyar also asked his sishyan, Sri Chakravathi RaamAnujAchAr , the brother of the would-be 30th pattam Azhagiya Singar ( Sri SrinivAsa VedAntha YathIndhra MahA Desikan/AasthAnam: March 1837- Sep 1842) to give his 6 year old daughter in marriage to the young boy, ThiruvEngatAcchAr. The marriage took place between the two sub-teen agers as was the custom in thise days . ThiruvEngadaacchAr grew up , acquired property at DevanAr ViLAgam as well besides his native Paritthupattu and was a wealthy land owner .Years went by and ThiruvEngadaacchAr Swamy did not have any children . As was the custom in those days, SrirangammA identified a Kannikai from nearby PoundarIkapuram as the second wife . Due to Bhagavath KatAksham ( MalOlan and Oppiliappan's anugraham), a boy was born in 1901 to ThiruvengadAcchAr and his second wife followed by two more sons and a daughter. The first boy was the One , who later ascended the Sri Matam Peetam ( AasthAnam : March 1953 to November 1957)as the 43rd Pattam Jeeyar. Interesting is the account behind the first son of ThiruvEngadAcchAr receiving the naamakaraNam of Lakshmi Narasimhan. The time was between the 37th and 38th Azhagiya Singars. HH The 37th Azhagiya Singar ascended parama Padham on Dec 16, 1899 . For the next 5 years and seven months , the Sri Matam Peetam was empty . Thirukkudanthai Sri ChakravarthyAcchAr Swamy became the 38th Peetam Jeeyar after this huge gap on July 17, 1905. Thus between Dec 1899 and July 1905, there were no Azhagiya Singars as PeetAdhipathis. Our Devanaaar ViLAgam Jeeyar was born in 1901 during this gap . A devotee representing the Sri Matam predicted few days before the birth of the first son of ThiruvengadacchAr that latter will have a boy and the child should be named Lakshmi Nrusimhan. On Kaarthikai PoorAdam , a boy was born and ThiruvEngadAcchAr duly named him Lakshmi Narasimhan . Our " Jeeyar-to-be " received pancha SamskAram from the 40th Jeeyar (AasthAnam : 1913-1923). He started his Sri BhAshyAdhi KaalkshEpams with that Azhagiya Singar and completed them under the 41st Azhagiya Singar ( AasthAnam : 1923-1941) during his twenties. If I remember right , the Thirukkudanthai Azhagiya Singar (HH The 38th Pattam; AasthAnam:1905-1909 ) were related to one branch of the Parutthipattu Vamsam of Srimath Azhagiya Singar (Jeeyarpuram NadAdhUr branch , whose relatives were the other family (Chinna sEtthi Paritthipattu Lakshmi AmmAL family) living in the DevanAr ViLAgam hamlet ). Sri Lakshmi Narasimhan of Boston , who is married into HH The 43rd Azhagiya Singar family can help clarify this link . Thus from the 27th pattam Azhagiya Singar time (ILanagar- GathAdharapuram Sri VathSanga vamsa Azhagiya Singar's time) to 38th pattam Azhagiya Singar's time ( Thirukkudanathai- ILanagar-GadhAdharapuram-SrivathSangam vamsam descendant), there has been connections ( 1829 through 1909 C.E). Those links continue for the DevanArviLAgam Jeeyar (43rd Jeeyar) thru AchArya sambhandham further from the 40 th Jeeyar thru the 45th Jeeyar. The 40th and The 41st Jeeyars blessed him (43rd Jeeyar )with KaalkshEpams ; The 42nd Jeeayr appointed him to succeed him ; The 44th Jeeayr was His Aasthaana VidvAn and Sri Kaaryam . He was at the 43rd Jeeyar's side as He ascended Parama Padham at NaimisAraNyam . The 45th Jeeyar peformed BharanyAsam with the 43rd Jeeyar of DevanAr ViLagam . Thus the many links of DeavanAr ViLAgam Jeeyar from His father's days (1880 C.E) to today , a span of 121 years covering the reigns of 27th Pattam Jeeyar to the current Jeeyar , Sri NaarAyaNa YathIndhra MahA Desikan. The links can be traced earlier to the 25th pattam and the 26th pattam Azhagiya Singars since the 25th pattam and the 26th Pattam Azhagiya Singars are also from the ILanagar -GadhAdharapuram-SrivathSangam Kulam . The 26th Azhagiya Singar was the son of the 25th Azhagiya Singar ( AasthAnam: March 1776- November 1811 C.E). The 35 years of reign of the 25th pattam Azhagiya Singar , who is regarded as the VainathEyAmsam , were golden years . His son , who succeeded His father as the 26th Azhagiya Singar is regarded as the amsam of ANDAL (AasthAnam : 1829-1831).The links of the DeavanAr ViLAgam Azhagiya Singar , asmath AchAryan , are thus deep indeed ! To gain a time perspective , it is appropriate to recall that from the time of the Founding AchAryan of Sri Matam , Adhi VaNN SatakOpa Jeeyar (AasthAnam: 1399-1458 C.E ) to the 27th pattam Azhagiya Singar's kaalam (AasthAnam: 1829 C.E), there were 27 Azhagiya Singars , who adorned the throne of Sri Matam across the time span of 430 years. From the Time of the 27th Pattam Azhagiya Singar ( Aasthanam : 1829 to 1831 C.E)) to Prakrutham Azhagiya Singar , the time span is 172 years. The sishyAs of Sri Matam celebrated the 600th anniversary of the founding of Sri Matam by MalOlan thru Adhi VaNN SatakOpar in September 1999. It is our prayer to MalOlan that He blesses the Prakrutham Jeeyar , who will be celebrating His 75th Thirunakshathram this November , to perform MalOlan's AaarAdhanam for many, many years to come and bless us all and grow this blessed Sri Matam with direct links to MalOlan and Swamy NammAzhwAr from day to day !
