I have received an email from a knowledgeable srivaishnava of India that there is *no* record in Guru parampara or any other work, that the taniyan " seeronRu thUppul " was composed by Sri PillailokAryar, though he sure had deepest and highest regards for Swamy Desikan. Is there any record which says " it is composed by Sri Pillailokcharyar " ? Please help Regards Narayana Narayana aDiyEn

Please help 3000 paDi Guruparampara-prabhAvam by 3rd Bramhatantra-svatantra jIyar does say that it was a taniyan composed by PiLLailOkAchArya. According to this document, during the later phase of PiLLailOkAchArya's life, he underwent kAlakshEpam under SwAmi DESikan for " SrI-BhAshyam " and rahasya grantas, though he was much elder. <<It would have been ofcourse to understand SwAmi DESikan's explanations and reconcile his views.>> During that time only, the taniyan is reported to have been composed. A comment is made that " Is itn't that because SwAmi DESikan has been lauded as VEdAntAchArya,Sarvatantra-Svatantra and KavitArkika-Simha, PiLLailokAchArya underwent SrI-BhAshya kAlakshEpam! " . This was least palatable to PiLLailOkAchArya's brother Azhagiya-ManavALa-PerumAL nAyanAr. 3000 paDi describes the activities of AMP nAyanAr and his associates, who wanted to disgrace SwAmi DESikan by some means or other, because of their " enviness/jealousy " << " asUyai " - as in 3000 paDi>> : 1. First they invited SwAmi DESikan for a debate, which SwAmi refused stating that he will not debate with rAmAnuja-aDiyArs {which will arise more ill-will and hatredness etc; It was not a talk to reconcile one's views etc in a calm manner}. Hence, they branded SwAmi DESikan as " asamarthar " {incapable person in SAstras} and hooked up their slippers as a garland in the entrance of SwAmi DESikan's thirumALigai for insulting DESikan to that effect. Rest is known .....how SwAmi DESikan took that as a stroke of fortune in coming in contact with the slippers/sandals of Hari-dAsas and expressed in joy that while some will be after karma,jn~Ana yoga, but his path is through the strength of the holiness of Hari-dAsa pAdukas " . They then seeked apology from SwAmi DESikan, by seeing such aatma-guNa pUrnatvam. 2. 3000 paDi also records that, AMP NAyanAr without able to tolerate the vaibhavam of SwAmi DESikan challenged the title of " KavitArkika-simha " and said that, only one who composes 1000 verses in one night's time can be entitled so. AMP NAyaAr declared that he woulkd compose 1000 verses on Ranganatha's Lotus Feet " padakamala-sahasram " and SwAmi DESikan replied that, he would compose RanganAtha 'pAdukA-sahasram' <<the object, which is a step lower than what SrI NAyanAr chose - to just show SwAmi DESikan's humility>>. It is reported that only 300 verses were composed by AMP NAyanAr. Rest is well known and how SwAmi DESikan even performed naichyAnusandAnam in front of AMP nAyanAr, by also glorifying nAyanAr ....which were well appreciated by elders and others who had assembled.. the way SwAmi DESikan advised to SrI-VaishNavas in general to shed-off egoism, jealousy etc esp within our own sampradAyam is also recorded in 3000 paDi <<refer AchArya Vaibhavam of SrI PuriSai swAmi / Archives - SrI CG Balaji, SrI MuraLidhar Rangaswamy have written on this>>. 3000 paDi also records the discussions between SwAmi DESikan and Peria-aacchAn-PiLLai (PVP). PVP wanted to know about intricacies of Prapatti and SwAmi DESikan handed over his compositions of NyAsa-VimSati and NyAsa-Tilakam. They then discussed its pros and cons using certain pAsurams of AzhwArs {the discussion in a gist is recorded in 3000 paDi}. PVP finally accepted it by exclaiming that SwAmi DESikan has got the paripUrNa kaTAksham of UDayavar. It is then reported that PVP requested the Prapatti-kramam, for which SwAmi DESikan gave him NyAsa-Dasakam, which was to the good satisfaction of PVP. This event took place before the above mentioned incidents. ----------------- As far as thenkalais are concerned, the taniyan was not written by PiLLailOkAchArya and they do not accept any of the above documented events in 3000 paDi as real.Instead, the post MAmunigaL period ThennAchAryas wrote some fictions that SwAmi DESikan (described as someone who had no other job other than to criticize other philosophies esp within rAmAnuja sampradAyam) deeply repented for having expounded such doctrines not acceptable to UDayavar, and hence fell at the feet of PVP and understood the actual sampradAyam ....The story goes on. Such stories are in circulation these days also. Some sensible ThennAchAryas try to reconcile that, it does not refer to SwAmi DESikan who is vary famous, but refers some other VEdAnta-DESikan of the past !! aDiyEn rAmAnuja dAsan, anantapadmanAbhan alias Anand. Guest guest
SrI: SrImathE Gopaladesika Mahadesikya namah: Dear Sri Anand, Thanks very much for yur time and great efforts in posting the detailed write up on adiyEn's request. As usual, it was clear, informative and well written. It is saddening to see our ThUppul PiLLai has undergone such a suffering. AsmadhAcharyan had said once to me with pain in his heart: Swamy Desikanukku vibhavA avathAratthilum paribhavam; archA avathAratthilum paribhavam. Swamy is an avtaar; Genius- multi faceted.. Scholar.. and naturally he was not liked and still is not... They can not be a match to his skill and hence, they played all negative tactics and are still playing... Are you sure SrI PVP and Swamy met.. I have a vague impression (of reading somewhere- let me check at home) that Sri PVP was before Swamy Desikan was born.. (Sri PVP born in 1228; Swamy in 1368 A.D). I may be wrong (which is not suprising and uncommon) Thanks again Regards Swamy Desikan ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam Narayana Narayana aDiyEn
Guest guest
SrI: Dear Sri Anand, I am sorry. I stand corrected. Swamy Desikan was born in 1268 (Ihad written 1368 by mistake). So it is very much possible, of course that they have met and are contemporaries. Regards Narayana Narayana aDiyEn
