Sri Mattapalli Naatham PRanathosmi Nithyam Namaha

Namaskaar to all.

I would like to request the learned members of this group to enlighten me on the

following point.

It has been mentioned by many Vedic scolars in their Upanyasams that there are

about 1130 odd Sakhaas of the Veda. I would like to know if

1) the names of all those Saakhaas are actually available today?

2) Where is this mentioned that there were 1130 odd Sakhas? Can you please give

me the source ?

Thanks and Regards,

With Mukkur and Mattapalli Narahari Smaranams,

Daasan,

Vijayaraghavan Bashyam

Actually there are two different views.

Count of 1133 comes from notes of Shankaracharya. According to him

There are 21 Sakhaas in Rig,

101 in Yajur,

1000 in sAma and

11 in Atharva vedas.

As per Vishnu Puranam there are 1180 Sakhaas distributed among

Rig - 21

Yajur - 109

sAma - 1000

Atharva - 50

Of these only the following seems to be available currently

Rig - 1 (sAgala/ IytharEya)

Yajur - 3 (kaNva, mAthyanthina, thithirIyam)

sAma - 3 (jaiminIya, raaNayanIya, gowthuma)

Atharva - 1 (chounaka)

In the Ramayanam Upanyasam of Sri Mukkur Swamy he mentions a good

number of them. You might want to refer His library to get all the

names.

If you are looking for 1133 refer to Deivathin Kural Vol 2 pages 432 -

434.

For 1180 refer to Vishnu Puranam.
