Guest guest
Dear Bhagavatas, Thanks a lot to Sri Hari and Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swami for their comments on the above subject. adiyen would like to add one more reason why Sri Rama did not return immediately with Bharata, heard on Sri Srivatsankachariar's commentary on Paduka Sahasram. This story is from the time when Dasaratha had 2 wives, Kowsalya and Sumitra. Dasaratha was anxiously travelling the world to find out from anybody and everybody, how he could beget a son. He heard from his courtiers that young Kaikeyi was an expert palmist. He promptly landed in her father's capital and demanded to see Kaikeyi. This gave her father a heart attack as Dasaratha was old, and Kaikeyi's father thought that he had come to ask for her hand in marriage. Dasaratha was also the predominant emperor of those days and Kaikeyis father did not have the means to win over him in battle. When he heard that Dasaratha wanted Kaikeyi to read his hand, the king of Kekaya breathed a sigh of relief. Dasaratha had only one question for Kaikeyi as he stretched out his palm; " Do I have a son in my future? " Pat came the reply. " Yes you not only have a son, but you also have another marriage. You are going to marry me. " What was to happen to Dasaratha years later at the hands of Kaikeyi nearly happened to her father at that time. Not knowing what to do or say, he agreed to the marriage. He also put in a request that Kaikeyi's son be crowned king. Dasaratha assumed at that time that since he was marrying Kaikeyi, she was going to bear him the one son he yearned for, he will have no problem in crowning that son. The rest is history. Dasaratha valued his word as the descendent of the Ikshvaku race more than anything else. Even at the time of Rama's coronation announcement, he manipulated the courtier's into making it seem like their decision rather than his. He did not doubt Kaikeyi's support of the decision. But he did have nagging doubts that his word to Kaikeyi's father would come back to haunt him. He attempted to resolve this dilemma by not inviting the king of Kekaya and the king of Mithila (Janaka) to Rama's coronation. Sri Rama gave everybody what they desired. To Vibheeshana it was moksham. To Anjaneya, it was His embrace and to Dasaratha it was to ensure that a descendent of Raghu did not go down in history as not having lived up to his word. It was for this reason, that Sri Rama even seemingly disobeyed even His Acharya's instruction to return to Ayodhya. By giving the Padukas to Bharata, he accomplished many goals in one shot. He was free to satisfy the devas' desire to get rid of Ravana. He did not disobey Vasishtha's instruction to return to Ayodhya. He ensured that Bharata did not disobey Dasaratha's word to Kaikeyi's father that he (Bharata) would become king. When Bharata bore the Padukas on his head, the white umbrella went over Bharata. The Chamaras waved cool breeze at Bharata. All other repects paid to a king was received by Bharata, pleasing Kaikeyi greatly. adiyen Ramanuja daasan, jagan. _______________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
