SrI:

SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah:

Dearest Srivaishnavas,

Sriman Satakopan mama has been showering (or pouring down on us heavily)

with his excellent posts translating the Saranagathi Deepika of Swamy

Desikan's towards the nithya thiruvArAdhanam kaimkaryam for Thuppul and

Thiruve:kkA Divya Desam. When I was enjoying these posts, I had requested

our Simhapuri Sri MS Hari Swamy for writing a Tamil poem on Swamy Desikan's

verses Saranagathi Deepika which Swamy immediately consented to (such a

sowlabhyam!-in spite of the appeal from a lowly soul like me.. he still

heeded to adiyEn's request.).

Incidentally, he writes excellent poems in Tamil (pure Tamil in strict

grammar with all seer, thaLai, yaapu, ilakkaNam etc.. and has written even a

computer program to check if his poems meet the rules of Yaappu ilakkaNam

(Tamil poetic Grammar) automatically. His poems are generally written in

veNpA (similar to mudhal, iraNdAm, moonRaam, and naanmukan ThiruvanthAthi-

with three lines of four " seer " and the last line

in three " seer " . [seer is sort of word though can not be termed so; it is

not the same as far as Grammar is concerned. It is actually a tougher meter

to write; The first seer of first two lines should have the yedhukai thodai

(rhyming second letter) and so is the last seer of second line in same

yedhukai thodai.. This seer becomes the tanich-chol (separate " word " ) in the

second line as per nErisai vEnpA grammer here.

The third line and fourth line can be in the same yedukai or different one.

Each line will have mOnai todai (first letter and related letter matching)

in poetical rhyming manner. All seers will be linked only by veNDaLai

(eyar-seer-veNDaLai and veN-seer-veNdaLai). The last seer of the fourth line

will be one of the nEr (nAL), nirai (malar), nErpu (kAchu) or niraipu

(piRappu)

vAipAttu seer.

Perhaps, Sri MS Hari himself can write better about this meter. (when time

permits). Now, my plan is to write a summary level meaning (oh no! not

again:-) for these verses just to enjoy his poems and the verse of Swamy

Desikan to supplement Sri Satakopan mama's kaimkaryam and request

Bhagawathas to do their part in sending (not emails; but money:-) for Nithya

ArAdhanam and Thuppul kaimkaryam.

Let us take the last verse of Sri Hari's for enjoyment. (before I send you

his full 130-numbered poem adaikkala viLakku (Saranagathy Deepikaa- the lamp

of Self -surrender)

mAdhavan kaNNan magizhndhu sevisaaykka

Odhi thirutthaNkA utthamanseer - vEdhiyanaam

What a lovely verse!

mAdhavan- the one who has Lakshmi in His Divine Chest..

kaNNan- Lord KrishNA.

magizhndhu- in order to enjoy

sevisaaykka - listening

vAsudEvan - (with the grace of ) Lord Vasudeva's

ghaNTaiyAl- The divine bell (i.e. due to Swamy Desikan's grace and

blessings)

vaazh- living (Sri Hari exists and lives only by the mere grace of Swamy

Desikan)

ari rAmAnusa dAsan- Sri Hari Ramanuja dAsan..

uraiithAn- spoke (wrote)- composed

in thamizh.. this sweet Thamizh verse on the lamp of Self Surrender (based

on Swamy Desikan's Saranagathi Deepika sthOthram..)

One can understand the depth of his Tamil jnAnam; saasthra jnAnam and the

devotion to Swamy Desikan and the sampradayam when we go through it. He is

simply amazing. He has written the whole 130 verses in a couple of hours

time.

Incidentally, Sri Hari had submitted about 500 Tamil verses written on Swamy

Desikan's meiviradha mAnmiyam, which was read, commented (and commended) by

asmadhAchAryan H.H Srimath Poundarikapuram Andavan Swamy.

It is our fortune to be at Singapore with him around.

Regards

Namo Narayana
