Guest guest
Dear Sri Anand Karlapakam, I was told the first Jeeyar of Ahobila Matam and a few Jeeyars afterwards were actually from rAmAnuja sampradayam (thennAcharya sampradayam). The Matam was later taken over by vadakalai sampradaya people. Is this true? Also Sri Malolan has a ramAnuja (thennAcharya) sampradaya nAmam, which is reflected in the pictures which were circulated in USA. Please clarify. Guest guest
Nivedana: All of us (Vadakalai & Thenkalai) belong to the Ramanuja SampradAyam. Unfortunately, the way you have written could be misleading. It is like saying ManavAla Mamunigal belonged to the Ramanuja SampradAyam first and later on adopted the thennAcharya SampradAyam. It doesn't sound correct. The person with the ramanujausa address is free to forward this mail wherever he wants!!! Thanks. Guest guest
At 10:57 AM 5/13/2002 -0700, Nivedana Nivedana wrote: >Dear Sri Anand Karlapakam, > >I was told the first Jeeyar of Ahobila Matam and a few Jeeyars afterwards >were actually from rAmAnuja sampradayam (thennAcharya sampradayam). The >Matam was later taken over by vadakalai sampradaya people. Is this true? Not true. Please note, Sri Vaishnavam has two branches called, (i) Vadakalai, also known as " Sri Desika Sampradayam " , and (ii) Thenkalai, aka " Then Acharya Sampradayam " . Both kalais trace their acharya lineage to Bahagavad Ramanuja. Therefore, both Sampradayams can be called Sri Ramanuja Sampradayam. It is not correct to say that Sri Ramanunja Sampradayam is Then AchArya Sampradayam. Some people, though sincere and devout, due to lack of familiarity with Sri Vaishnava history do associate Sri Ramanuja with Thenkalai and Swami Sri Desika with Vadakalai. To my utter consternation adiyEn has heard this one too many times from Vadakalais themselves. Some (emphasis on " some " ) knowledgeable Thenkalais point this out with glee and claim authentic and exclusive ownership of Sri Ramanauja siddantham. For them, the term Desika Sampradayam is an affront to Sri Ramanuja. The fact remains, Sri Ramanuja is darsana sthapakar for modern times and Swami Sri Desikan is the protector of Bhagavad Ramanuja Siddantam from rival schools. Without Sri Ramanuja Sri Vaishnavam would not have had the revival, and without Swami Sri Desika it would not have survived. It is not an exaggeration to say, but for Swami Sri Desikan, neither Vadakalai, nor Thenklai would have survived to this day. In line with the core principle of Sri Vaishnavam, namely, BhAgavatha service is even superior to Bhagavad service, and, service to parama bhAgavada is most pleasing to the Lord Himself; honoring Swami Sri Desika (the most exalted sishya of Sri Ramanuja Sampradayam) by calling our Ramanuja Sampradayam as Desika Sampradayam will be most pleasing to Sri Ramanuja himself and by corollary, to the Lord Himself. As far as Sri Ahobila Matam Jeeyars are concerned, what you are told is not true. This can be verified with Guruparamapara texts. Please refer to " Acharya Vaibhavam " written by Sri Purisai Swami and published by Sri Visihitadvaita Research Centre. I do not have the source text used by Sri Purisai Swami. Perhaps someone in Chennai (Sri Anand Karalappakkam) can approach Sri Purisai Swami and get the references. It is a fact that Sri Ahobila Matam sishyas share their Samasrayana Paramparai with the dominant ThenAcharya Sampradayam. As we traverse the Acharya Paramparai tree from the present Acharya on up to Sri Ramanuja and beyond, from Sri Vadakku ThiruveedippiLLai onwards Sri Ahobila Matam and ThenAcharyas have the same samasrayana lineage. But this does not mean Sri Ahobila Matam jeeyars were Thenkalai Acharyas. Neither does this mean the Acharays from Sri Ramanuja until Sri Vadakku ThiruveedippiLLai are Then Acharya. In fact from 3000 Padi GPP we can see that Sri Vadakku ThiruveedippiLlai was a sihsya of Sri Nadathur Ammal. Sri Purisai Swami cites Guru Paramparai and states that up until the time of the 5th Jeeyar, all Sri Vaishnavas, who were later to become Vadakalais and Thenkalais, were together. They maintained their intellectual differences. This can be verified by the fact Swami Sri Manavala Mamuigal himself studied Sri Bhashya under Kidambi Nayinar aka Purushotama Desikar at Kanchi, a Parakala Matam sishya. Having said all this, there is a trace of truth in the claim. The fifth Jeeyar of Sri Ahobila Matam was indeed a Thenkalai by birth (the only Jeeyar from Thenacharya sampradaym according to Guru Paramparai). However, by the time the Jeeyar ascended to the throne of Sri Sannidhi he had embraced Vadakalai Sampradayam by adopting Bhara Samarpanam as prescribed by Swami Sri Desikan and practices by all Vadakalais including all the Jeeyars of Sri Ahobila Matam. These facts can be verified from Guru Paramparai texts cited by Sri Purisai Swami. >Also Sri Malolan has a ramAnuja (thennAcharya) sampradaya nAmam, which is >reflected in the pictures which were circulated in USA. With the caveat, ramanuja samprayam is NOT synonymous with ThenAcharya, the above claim that Sri Malolan adorns a Thenkalai thiruman is just not true. Please give us a link or reference to this picture that is being circulated in USA. BTW, there are tons and tons of pictures in http://www.ahobilamutt.org and anyone can visit the site and verify. -- adiyEn ramanuja dasan srimad azhagiya singar thiruvadi
