Guest guest
Respected Ramanuja Bhaktas, There will be a partial solar eclipse occuring approximately between 3:30 and 5:30 Eastern Standard Time today. It will be visible throughout most of the United States, and in the East Coast will enhance what is expected to be a magnificent sunset this evening. More information on the eclipse itself can be found at: http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/ASE2001/ASE2001.html Whether partial or total, solar eclipses are fascinating and awe-inspiring experiences. And, for those of us who are followers of Vedic culture, they take on added meaning as being times of deep mystical and spiritual significance, as it is said that the efficacy and potency of mantras are enhanced by the mystical energy of the sun in eclipse. Traditionally, it is suggested that the following steps be taken to enhance the positive effects and reduce the negative impact of a solar eclipse: * Avoid taking food or water for about 3 hours prior to and during the eclipse * Those of you having the sacred darbha grass, which is said to resonate with spiritual energy, should place a blade of this at the back door and front door of your home. * If you are at home, bathe during the eclipse and then set aside some quiet time to silently meditate on the dvAyam or any other mantra on Sriman Naryana. For those who should do so, tarpanam should also be performed. * After the eclipse concludes, take a shower and wash your hair to complete the process of meditation. Today being a working day, the vast majority of us will probably be spending our time hardly taking note of this mystical event of Nature. But, let us at least take a moment during this time to reflect on the Mystery and Grandeur of this Universe, and to meditate on Him Whose Poetry and Artistry brings all of this into being. adiyEn rAmAnuja dAsan Mohan
