Guest guest
[Editorial comment] Respected Ramanuja Bhaktas, This posting discusses what our Teachers feel is the one of most beautiful qualities of Sri Rama. For me, meditating on the Lord and his relationship to Guha is a source of both devotion and inspiration. adiyEn rAmAnuja dAsan Mohan [End comment] Jai Srimannarayana! Sri Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Saranam! Va:lmiki asked Na:rada: Who is the gunava:n? Though guna:s mean qualities, as Va:lmiki has questioned who is the gunava:n, we can understand that, only one quality can be regarded as a guna: (quality). That is sausi:lyam. A person with a good character is a susi:la and his dharma is 'sausi:lyam'. If a person who is uncomparable to anyone with regard to his birth or knowledge or wealth, mingles with all others, without any inhibitions, is said to have sausi:lyam. Sausi:lyam is defined as: " mahataha manddaissaha ne:randhre:na samsle:shaha sausi:lyam " . Though Rama was most superior by his birth, lineage, knowledge and wealth he mixed with all others freely never giving them a feeling of inferiority. This is the main characteristic required for a human being. A person without this quality need not be considered a human being at all. A common being feels that He (the soul) is his body and attributes all the good things of his body to himself and takes pride in them. This miscnoception is termed as 'asurathvam'. 'Ma:navatvam' is NOT to take pride in the greatness that has been blessed to one's body. This quality ( ma:navatvam ) is the most essential requisite for a human being. SriRama belongs to the great royal lineage of Surya (surya vamsam); a great scholar in all the Vedas and upa-vedas like archery; a son of a great king of kings. Nobody can match him in these, but his three dear friends were such that one was a simple tribal boat man, the second was not even a human being, a va:nara and the third was a ra:kshasa (a demon). The first one was Guha, the second one was sugri:va and the third was vibhi:shana. When we observe how SriRamachandra behaved or carried on with these three, we will understand what this quality'sausi:lya' really is. SriRamachandra along with Seetha and Lakshmana came to Sringiberapuram, the village where Guha lived On the banks of Riven Ganges while going to the forest. Guha wanted to welcome SriRama offering arghya-pa:dyam (water). SriRama goes forward to meet the approaching Guha and tells him: " archita:schaiva hrustha:scha " , " We have been worshipped. We are happy " . The reason to say that He had already received the worship before being actually worshipped is:SriRama said, " padbya: abhi ma:ga: chchaiva sne:ha sandarsane: nacha " . " Guha! You came forward walking to me. You showed great love what more is required for a worship? " . SriRama embraces Guha and says " Oh, friend, you are dear to my heart; you are a true friend to me. " Is Guha equal to SriRamachandra in any respect? But SriRama regards him so, mingles with him without any reservations and ackowledges the fact to the world. That is Sausi:lya. To be continued...
