Guest guest
Respected Ramanuja Bhaktas, If I may be permitted, for the benefit of those who may be unfamiliar with some of the concepts presented in Sri Sadagopan's set of postings, here is a brief explanation on the Thiru Adhya:yana Utsavam: (I should explain to the erudite members of this forum that almost 50% of the Ramanuja Society's discussion list is made up of Westerners; many of whom may have had limited exposure to the nuances of the more formal Sri Vaishnava parlance; but, it should be noted with due regard that all of them have an avid interest in learning about Sri Ramanuja and His Vision) Each year, several of the revered Divya De:shams, the 108 sacred temples that are recognized to be the most auspicious for followers of Ramanuja's Vision, conduct a Festival of Recitation, in which all 4000 Sacred Verses that were recited by the A:zhva:rs, the 12 mystical Tamil saints of South India, are recited in a lavish way in service to the Lord. The Na:layira Divya Prabhandam, the Collection of the Sacred 4000, holds a very deep meaning in the hearts and lives of followers of Ramanuja, because they contain the same essential meaning of the Veda, the Eternal Wisdom of the Universe. But, unlike the Vedas, which are traditionally limited to be learned and chanted by only male members of the priestly class, the profound Tamil chants can be learned, recited, and experienced by anyone and everyone, irrespective of race, caste or gender. Although every Sri Vaishnava temple in India recites parts of the 4000 Sacred Verses on a daily basis and over the year, the recitation of all 4000 in one series is done only once per year during this Festival. And, among the places where this Festival of Recitation is performed, the one at the Temple of Temples, Sri Rangam, holds special significance, as it is this temple that the Azhva:rs, Sri Ramanuja, his predecessors, and fore bearers held, and continue to hold, very dear to to their hearts. The celebration at Sri Rangam takes place over 21 days, beginning on the 11th day (e:kadasi) after the new moon in the sacred month of Ma:rgazhi (Dec. 16 - Jan. 14). During the first 10 days, 2000 of the 4000 verses - or pa:surams, as they are called in Tamil - are recited and enacted through traditional dance during the morning hours. Over the next 10 days, the remaining 2000 pa:surams, including the revered Thiruvai:mozhi, or Sacred Utterance of Namma:zhva:r, are recited at night. The bliss of seeing devotees gathering by the tens of thousands to share a glimpse of the Lord rejoicing at the sound of His Sacred 4000 is something that can only be experienced to be understood. But, one need not go all the way to India to participate or observe the devotion and celebration of the Festival of Recitation. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of a number of devotees, the Festival of Recitation takes place annually, albeit on a smaller scale, at two temples here in the US, Sri Venkateswara Perumal (Balaji) Temple in Aurora, Illinois, and, in fitting salute to Sri Rangam itself, at Sri Ranganatha Temple in Pomona, New York. Sri Sadagopan's postings are in regards to Sri Ranganatha Temple, which is conducting this festival over 10 days and nights between Dec. 21 and Dec. 30. The temple is seeking sponsors to help in supporting the costs for organizing and conducting an event of this size, and has taken a unique approach to this by asking for just $1 for each pa:suram that will be chanted. I would like to provide my humble support for Sri Sadagopan's efforts by encouraging all of you to make your tax deductible contribution to this worthy cause. You may also wish to consider purchasing Volume I of the International Ramanuja Society's latest multi-media CD ROM, The Greatness of the first 7 A:zhva:rs, which will provide you with much more detail on the awe-inspiring lives and religious experience of the Tamil mystics. Each CD is $25, part of the proceeds going towards the Festival of Recitation at Pomona New York. I would also like to this opportunity to encourage everyone to make the effort to attend at least part, if not all, of the grand Festival of Celebration in Pomona, in order to directly experience the sense of time-honored tradition and sincere devotion that forms such an important part of Sri Ramanuja Darshanam.
