Sri Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Saranam

Kusa and Luva learnt such Sri Ramayanam from Valmiki and learnt to sing.

They earned proficiency in music. They were great singers. They had a

melodious voice. They were great in appearance and had charming

features. Singing sweetly they were like the celestial singers,

gandharvas. They were just like the reflections of Sri Rama’s image.

They memorized the whole Ramayanam perfectly and could sing the whole

without the help of a book.

First they wanted to recite this in the assemblages of rishies. The

rishies got ready to listen to them with all enthusiasm. When Kusa and

Lava were singing Ramayana the rishis listened to them with utmost

attention and praise. The sages and saints exclaimed, “Oh! How sweet is

their singing! The slokas are splendid. When listening to them, We can

visualize the past story as if happening in front of our eyes now. Both

the children are singing with great melody and sweetness.”

When they both finished singing one sage presented them his kalasa

happily. Another reputed sage gave them his deer skin, another sage

presented his jute cloth and yet another presented a ‘kamandalam’ and a

sacred thread. Sri Ramayanam is a wonderful story. Muni Valmiki penned

it. ‘Dharma artha and Kamam are illustrated in this ka:vya and this is

the source for the later writers. By listening to this kavya one would

be blessed with longevity, derive power of mind and strength of body and

senses. 'There would be none who would not be attracted to this kavya

after listening to it’, thus praised the sages.
