" Once when Parasara Bhattar Narrated Kaisika Puranam(a part in Varaha puranam) in the court (asthanam) of SriRanganatha on a night of Ekadasi in Karthigai month,Namperumal rejoiced at the excellence and perfection of Bhattar's Narration. The Exquisite ,irreproachable,pleasant way of Presentation of the purana along with its elaboration(Vyagyanam) performed by the celebrity and beloved adopted son of Srirangam Couple made SriRanganatha to bestow forth with salvation (moksha) to Bhattar.He offered Bhattar(Melveedu) and Bhattar accepted it readily with humility.Bhattar replied , 'MahaPrasadam'.The Next Morning Bhattar was called for to his court,paid all reverences from the temple (including the garland worn by him-Sathikalaintha Malai) and ordered the temple officials to return Bhattar to his Thirumaligai with all reverences paid to him. This rare Vaibhavam is performed in a right Processional style every year only in selected Divyadesams(srirangam,Azhwar Thirunagiri,Thirukkurungudi & Thirukkovalur).This Vaibhavam was very impressive to see When Sri Parasara Azhagia Singa Bhattar swamy(Respected father of our Founder trustee of Srimaan Trust) devotedly narrated the Kaisika Puranam with his magnanimous voice on 21/11/07 in the midnight.The purana Patanam which lasted for more than 100 minutes made the devotees sit spell bound with pindrop silence at the Arjuna mandapam.The Performance was very pleasing and excellent and it showed not only in the faces of the crowd but also in the face of SriRanganatha. In the early morning of 22 nd Nov 07 Namperumal sent his persons of court headed by the Maniyakarar to invite Bhattar to his court.When Bhattar swamy went to his court he was greeted & garlanded by the garland won by SriRanganatha and After Theertha,sadari reverences ,SriRangantha ordered to return Bhattar to His Thirumaligai with all reverences.The temple elephant & horse headed the procession and Mavilai Thoranam,Mela Nathaswaram,velli thadi(silver maces),umbrella,samaram etc followed.Adhyapaga's came reciting Divya Prabhandam and Vedhas in between VIPs and Devotees.Sathatha SriVaishnavas brought the rear.Bhattar swamy dressed in angi & thoppi was seated on the Kedayam and was carried by SriPathamThangikal.It was an eye catching sight to see the Bhattar swamy in the midst of Procession.To add more attraction a number of crackers (called vedi) and Mathappoo in front.The procession went in all four Uthara Streets where most of the houses were decorated with kolam on the doorfronts.A number of Srivaishnava women Performed Arathi to Bhattar in protection from kannechil(Dhrishti). When the Bhattar swamy reached his thirumaligai he sat in Asthanam and all VIPs of the temple( Arayar swamy,Maniyakarar swamy,Acharya Purushas,Koil archagas ,Adyapakargal,Vedha parayana swamigal,Sthanikas,sthalathars,Theerthakaras) etc came to pay homage to the Bhattar swamy and after their mangalasasanam,Bhattar swami offered Beetal leaves,Beetal nut & sambavana.Many devotees,sishyas paid homage to Bhattar and were blessed. And Srimaan Trust took this opportunity to serve and had arranged for Thadiyaradhana. With the Tirumaligai Prasadam, at the end the vaibhavam ended happily. However i feel the historic nature of this feature should not be missed. IN a recent issue of Kalachuvadi (November 2007), a tamil monthly from Nagar Kovil a good review has appeared on how the original whole night Kaisika Drama in the temple got truncated to 45 min afafir after Independence and when the Devadasi Sytem was abolished.The revival by Prof S Ramanujam helped by Ms Anita Ratnam (who belongs to Thirukkurungudi, it seems) by painstaking search of traditional experts in this drama. They locaetd the families of dancers who performed in those days and have reconstrcuuted some of the lost concepts. Not to miss is the fact that Namperuaml was not a Vaishnavaite Brahmin and in true Sri Ramanuja tradition , he is one in every way. I am sure we will clelebrate this aspect also and not just remember very mythological story.
