Lord raghupatI! O Lord srI rAma! O Lord of all Worlds! O Excellent of men! Who else is the person equal in protecting (as You do) kindly? Who is the person to protect always gracefully (as You did), (a) by giving lanka as a gift to vibhISaNa, to the felicitation of indra and others? (b) by following the sage visvAmitra to look after the sacrificial oblation and thrashing the wicked mArIca and others? © by shooting down vAli with a single arrow and making sugrIva a king? Who else is there to protect (as You do) by holding the hand of this tyAgarAja who has not learnt the method of crossing over the Ocean of Wordly Existence?

P – brOcEvArevarE – this is how it is given in all the books other than that CR and ATK, wherein it is given as ‘brOcuvArevarE’. This needs to be checked. Any suggestions???

 

General – The arrangement of caraNas 2 to 8 are as given in books other than that of TKG, wherein charaNas 2 to 4 are given as pallavi 2 to 4. Also, in that book each of these are preceded by word ‘brOcEvArevarE’. CharaNas 6 and 7 are interchanged in the book of CR. This needs to be checked. Any suggestions???

 

C6 – savambu – this is how it is given in the books of TKG and TSV/AKG. However in the book of CR, this is given as ‘savanamu’. ‘savamu’ and ‘savanamu’ mean same.

 

C6 – khala – this is how it is given in all the books other than that of TKG, wherein it is given as ‘kala’. As ‘khala’ is the appropriate word, the same has been adopted. This needs to be checked. Any suggestions???

 

C8– nErani – this is how it is given in all the books other than that of TKG, wherein it is given as ‘lErani’. As ‘nErani’ is the appropriate word, the same has been adopted. This needs to be checked. Any suggestions???

This Kriti is about the celebration of the dhivyAtma svaroopam and the dhivya mangaLa vigraham of Lord Raamachandra and His vaibhavam as Raghuveeran of unmatched prowess. The Kriti is set in Sriranjani raagam and Aadhi tALam. It is a janyam of the 22nd MeLam, Karahara Priyaa. It is a shadava raagam with six svarams. It is closely related to AabhOgi and JayamanOhari. It is an adhidhurita Raagam unlike AabOgi and the fastest manOdharmam can be exercised in this singing as demonstrated by the rendering by Sri Jesudas. Maarubhalga and SogusukA Mrudhanga are two other famous Sriranjani raaga kritis by Sadhguru SwamigaL. The ArOhaNa –avarOhaNams for the SrIranjani raagam are: SR2 G2 M1 D2 N2 S / S N2 D2 M1 G2 R2 S.

Experts (Dr.Srivatsava and others) have compared Sriranajani with AabhOgi in rendering and focused on their similarities and dissimilarities. They say: “Both AabhOgi and Sriranjani are Moorchanaa, tristAyi, sama kaalapramANa rakti raagams, which can be traversed from the mantra sthAyi panchamam to madhyamam of the taara sthAyi. Ri, Ma, and dha form the svarasthAna or may be nyAsa svarams for AbhOgi, where as Ga and ni form the kampita swaras for Sri Ranjanai. The ragas enable Kadu, Janta and pratyAhata prayOgams. Both do not stick to any kaala pramANams. AbhOgi is not an athi dhurita raagam, whereas Sriranjanai is well known for its dhuritamâ€.

In this kriti, SwamigaL asks with wonder: Oh the best among Men! SrI rAmaa! Who is there among Men or dEvAs, who can protect people at times of their distress like You? You rush to their side with love. Your generosity is unmatched as revealed from Your compassionate giving away of the just won nation of Lanka to VibheeshaNan, an act that was praised by the king of dEvAs at the battle field of Lankaa. (DevEndhrAdhulu mecchuDaka Lanka dayatO dhAna mOsanghi sadhaa). There is no match for Your valour in killing the mighty Vaali with a single arrow and crowning SugrIvaa as the king of Kishkindhaa. Who could have accomplished that task except You? Who would have travelled as a young boy of Sixteen with Sage Viswaamitraa to SiddhAsramam and protected the Yaagam of the sages there by killing mighty rAkshasAs like Maarichi? In another kriti praising the bravery of the Lord in killing SubhAhu, Maareecha and TaaDakai, SwamigaL would declare that it is beyond him to describe the Lord’s heroism in the battle field in his KaikavaSi raga kriti, Vaachamaa gOcharamE, Manasaa! varNimpa taramE? There is none to match Your bravery. Who else would have taken me by hand and protected me from all struggles of my life and showed me the safe way to cross the ocean of SamsAram? You are matchless in Your dayaa, heroism and Aasrita Vaatsalyam.

In this kriti, Sathguru SwamigaL focused on the valour and SaraNAgatha rakshaka saamarthyam of the Lord, while celebrating Lord Raamachandran’s roopa and GuNa Mahima. In other roopa mahimaa kritis, SwamigaL will sing raptourously about the Lord’s beauty: (1) Maravakaraa nava manmatha roopini—DevaghAndhAri raagam, (2) Mohana Raamaa –Raagam Mohanam, (3) Sogasu jooda taramaa—Kannada GouLa, (4) LaavaNya Raama – Rudhra Priyaa, (5) Intanuchu varNimpa taramaa –GuNtakriyaa, (6) MuddhumOmu –SooryakAntam, (7) yentu kougalinturA? ninnEntani varNinturA? – Raagam Suddha Desi and (8) MerusamAna dheerA! Varadha! Raghuveera! juthAmu raaraa mahaa—MaayaamaLavagouLai Raagam. Some times, SwamigaL will be spell bound by the sweet and diplomatic speech of the Lord (Mrudhu bhAshaNa nata VibheeshaNa – Maaruva dhanyAsi raagam and Emani MaataaDitivO? Raama! yvari manasu yEvidhamO telisi –ThOdi Raagam). The best among these roopa Mahimaa krtitis is the VarALi Ghana pancharatna kriti, Kana Kana ruchiraa, Kanaka vasana, ninnu.
