naH chithracharithrakramaiH

bhooyobhiH bhuvanaani amooni

kuhanaagopaaya gopaayathe

kaalindheerasikaaya kaaliyaphaNi-

rangothsangaviSankachankrama

Dhuraaparyaayacharyaa yathe

 

May

our obeisance denoted by the word namaH be only to the Lord who is under the

guise of a cowherd, protects these worlds by numerous wonderful acts, enjoying

on the banks of river Yamuna, dancing fearlessly on the broad hoods of Kaliya

as though on a stage and such great acts.

bhavathu –may be

 

naaThaaya eva- only to the Lord

 

kuhanaa gopaaya- who in the guise of a cowherd, kuhana means

deceptive, one who deludes all by appearing as a cowherd, being Himself the

Supreme Self.

 

gopaayathe- protects

 

amooni bhuvanaani- these worlds

 

bhooyobhiH- by numerous, the word bhooyaH means `again' as a indeclinable and

abundance in the declinable form, bhooyas declined like manas.

 

chithracharithrakramaiH- wonderful acts

 

kaalindheerasikaaya- who enjoying on the banks of Yamuna

 

kaaliyaphaNi

sphaara sphataa vaatikaa

rangothsanga viSanka chankrama

dancing

fearlessly in the center of the stage of the broad hoods of the serpent Kaliya

 

phaNi –serpent, phaNa means a hood, phaNi is the one

with hood, a serpent.

 

sphaara –broad or wide

 

sphataa- hood

 

vaatikaa ranga- the hall of dance stage

 

uthsanga- in the middle or center

 

viSanka- without fear, Sankaa means doubt here means fear,

viSanka is without fear.

 

chankrama- moving round and round, dancing.

 

Dhuraaparyaaya charyaa - Dhuraa- difficult or great, charyaa-act

 

Yathe

–one who indulges in

 

Thus

Desika describes the Krishnavatara in this sloka. All the leelas of the Lord

disguising Himself as a cowherd arefor the protection of the worlds. Says Desika.

The Lord Himself has said in the Gita, parithraaNaaya

saaDhoonaam vinaaSaaya cha dhushkrthaam DharmasamsThaapanaarThaaya sambhavaami

yuge yuge. " I manifest Myself in every aeon to protect the good and to

punish the wicked."
