What is the reaction of the srivaishnavas when they see others (even their own

relatives and friends) going to different places and getting themselves involved

in other activities other than bhagavat vishayam? Do they feel jealous of the

others living a sophisticated happy life?

--\

----------------------------

No. The biggest strength of Srivaishnavas is they never feel jealous.

Mamunigal says, “PIRAR MINUKKAM PORAMAI ELLA PERUMAIYUM PETTROME”.

Srivaishnavas are happy with what they have. After all they have the wealth and

happiness, which is permanent. It may appear to others that the bhagavatas are

suffering but they never care about the same. Bhagavatas feel sorry for the

lowkikas who run after men and money and ultimately are put only to misery.

When we have everything why should we feel jealous of others? That is why,

mAmunigal says we have been blessed with the quality of being without jealously

for ever. But surely our alwars and acharyas have sung in various places about

the pitiable state of the samsAris. But if we ask a lowkikan then they say that

they are very happy and only the srivaishnavas running at the back of perumal

are poor and without anything. They will never understand the mental state and

happiness of the srivaishavas who live a simple life without any tension.

KooraththAzhvan had so much wealth in kooram, his birth village. He used to do

so much annadAnam. But one fine day wanting to surrender under the divine feet

of acharya rAmAnuja he left all the wealth and came empty handed to srirangam.

From then on throughout his life he lived as an unjavritti (one who takes alms

and eats) but remained with more happiness and mental peace than when he was in

kooram. Such is the greatest of bhagavatas. They know that the lowkika

pleasures are temporary and cherish spending their time with the athma bandhus

who are permanent relatives. When koorathAzhvan left such huge wealth and came

to the divine feet of his acharya, will he at any time feel jealous of anyone

who is wealthy? KoorthAzhvan was capable of learning the whole of the

bhOdhayana vritti grandham (visistAdvaita commentary to brahma sutram) in a

single day. Still he never considered himself to be great. Will he be jealous

seeing any well-educated person? Never. Each Srivaishnava is blessed with good

knowledge and kainkarya sri by his acharya and hence no srivaishnava will ever

be jealous of anything in this world.

That is what mAmunigal says in the last line of this paasuram. Like this each

and every paasuram in this prabandham, “Arthi Prabhandam” has very indepth

meanings, covering all our Srivaishnava sampradaya arthas. This writeup is just

a sample to show how the divine meanings have been inscribed in this single

paasuram by Swamy Manavala mAmunigal. This is a very weak attempt to do the

same, limited to adiyen’s ignorance and lack of understanding. But due to the

wish to write about our Periya Jeeyer’s masterly work during the time of his

thirunatshatram, adiyen started this series of postings and due to the divine

grace of Sri Andal samEtha Sri Parthasarathi emperuman and the divine blessings

of asmad Acharyan, Sri Vanamamalai kaliyan rAmAnuja Jeeyer swamigal (descendants

of Sri ponnadikkAl Jeeyer, who was the first and foremost disciple of Sri

Mamunigal) and all the bhagavatas of this group, this great herculean task has

finally come to an end.
