THE EIGHTH TEN

'The Three Great Hurdles

" mUnRuthathukkup pizhaithu aruvinai nOi maRuval idAmal, siriyEan enRadhan

perumaiyaik kAtta'

The Three Great Hurdles: The Three great hurdles of AzhwAr are listed as

hereunder:

What is the nature of the hurlde mentioned here? The feeling of AzhwAr that Such

a great Lord is showering His compassion whereas AzhwAr is a very ordinary

person and is not fit to inter-act with the Lord Almighty. This feeling makes

AzhwAr to distance himself. These feelings are removed by the Lord Himself.

1. one in the " vaLavEzh " thiru voi mozhi where AzhwAr expressed the term

'aruvinaiyEan " conveying the fact that he is a person full of

'sins'-aruvinaiyEan.

2. one in the 'porumA nEL padai' thiru voi mozhi where he states that

" sindhaiyuL vaippan solluvan pAviyEan " -- mentioning that he not only thinks of

the Lord but also speaks about Him but he is not fit even for that.

3. one in the " andhAmathu anbu " thiru voi mozhi by mentioning " allAviyuL

kalandha " and ' en mudivu kANAdhEa ennuL kalandhAnai " AzhwAr expresses the same

feeling of being unfit for Lord's nearness.

This feeling again emanates in the thiru-voi-mozhi " iruthum viyandhu " when

AzhwAr says " siriyEanudai sindhaiyuL " mentioning that the great Lord has settled

in such a small person/s mind.

The Lord Almighty wanted to put an end to this feeling once and for all. AzhwAr

tried to distance considering the smallness of himself. The Lord explained the

very nature of the soul. The soul is adorned by the Lord where the Lord

considers the soul as an ornament and enjoys the togetherness. This elucidation

of the nature of the soul by the Lord to remove the hurdles once and for all is

the crux of this .

pAsuram-s:

" aruviniyEan " ---1-5-1---> AzhwAr expressing his inferiority.

" sindhayuL vaippan solluvan pAviyEan " --1-10-7---> where AzhwAr expresses the

feeling that he is not fit even to speak about the Lord Almighty.

" al AviyuL kalandha " -------------------------------> 2-5-5}Without

considering my lowness the Lord

Almighty has interacted and mixed freely with me

" en mudivu kANAdhEa ennuL kalandhAnai " 2-5-8 }

The hurdle-inferior feeling shows up again in

" siriyEanudiach sindhaiyuL " --8-7-8-- > the Lord has settled in my mind . I am a

very small person.

The nature and the pride of AtmA-soul is shown by the Lord:

" yAnum thAnAi vozhindhAn'--- 8-8-4 and

" thEanum, palum, kannalum, amudhumAgith thithithu' 8-8-4 thus the Lord

unequivocally displaying the fact that

this soul which is perceived as small by AzhwAr is desired by the Lord and is

one which will give happiness to Him and hence, the soul is not small but a

desired one to be always with the Lord Almgihty.

Thus the three hurdles are removed not to be repeated again.
