thiru-k-kaNNapuram

Yesterday my professional work took me to Ennore to a cold storge plant. While

we were in the offie of the plant, we could hear big sound constantly. On

enquiry, I was taken upstairs to the terreace and lo! the vast expanse of the

sea was visible across the compund wall. The waves which was going back and

forth was making the sound banging on the wall of the factory.

My thoughts slowly drifted towards our beloved

'thiruk-kaNNa-puram'.

The thiru-voi-mozhi-p pAsuram 'mAlai nanni, thozhudu ezhuminOA! vinai

keda....vElai mOdhum madhiL sUzh " 9-10-1 clearly narrates this very event. The

waves of the sea bangs on the great wall of thiruk-kaNNa-puram.

Everyone knows that thirukkaNNapuram is about 15kms away from the sea. Then how

is it sated by AzhwAr that the sea is confronting the temple walls? It is the

esteemed opinion of our elders that the sea must have been near the temple

earlier and must have receded now.

This is not a stray thought by nam-AzhwAr but sri thirumangain mannan has also

touched on this aspect.

" ..kalangal munnEr kaNNapurathu " periya thiru-mozhi 8-8-2

The thiru-k-kaNNapuram having sea in one side.

Well what does Edu say in this regard:

'samudhram aNithAgiyAlEa, thiraigaLAlEa vandhu mOdhA ninRuLLa sUzap

pattirundhuLLa thiruk-kaNNa-puram'

As the sea is nearby, the thiru-kaNNapuram is surrounded by walls where the sea

waves bang back and forth.

Is it all? No there are more walls to the story.
