Dear All,

aDiyEn apologises for wrongly spelling the word of Poigai. It is called as

'karandam Adu Poigai' by Azhwars. This also has got great vaibhavam, which we

will discuss in one of the next few postings.

'KAlathizhikulathu chandAlanAnAlum mEladhavar adhanin mEnmaithE

KOlakkurungudivAzh mAyan kuraikazharkku AlAvar perumkudiyil vAzhvar pirappu'

The above verse was written by Pillai Perumal Iyengar in his 108 Thirupathi

Andhadhi about the beautiful Perumal in archAvatAram. The following is the

meaning of the above verse,

‘If a person has been blessed by the Perumal in Thirukkurungudi, even if he is

born in chandala kulam (so called lower caste), he still will be leading a life

of very high cadre, even higher than that of Maharishis.’

Known as Thirukkurungudi, this beautiful (aDiyEn needs to use this word agaian

and again over this series. The beauty of this place and Perumal is very

inherent) pandiya nattu Divya Desam is located about 27 miles from Tirunelveli,

and about 8 miles from Swayamvyakta Kshetram, Vaanamaamalai. It is also called

as Vamana Kshetram, Dakshina Badri, Siddhashramam and Kurundhapuri. The Perumal

here is known as Sundara Paripooranan (now we can realise why aDiyEn is very

particular in using the words beauty and completeness), Vadivazhagiya Nambi,

Thirukkurungudi Nambi, and more than anything else as SriVaishnava Nambi. His

name shows that He is the One with sakala kalyAna Gunam. The unique beauty of

this Perumal is the varna kalApam (colours, unlike other Perumals). Thayar

ThirunAmam is Kurungudivalli NachiyAr. Utsava Moorthy of Thayar is always with

Perumal, unlike most of the other Divya Desams. The Divya Desam is located on

the hill side of Mahendragiri.

In this Divya Desam, Perumal resides in standing, sitting and reclining posture.

There are 5 sannidhis for Perumal. Other than the above 3 sannidhis, Perumal

also resides as ThiruppArkadal Nambi and Malai Nambi. Here is the representation

of Perumal for each of His 5 states:

Nindra Nambi - Vibhavam

Irutha Nambi - Param

Kidantha Nambi - Archai

ThiruppArkadal -Nambi vyUham

Malai Nambi - AntaryAmin

The name of the vimAnam is ‘Pancha Ketaka vimAnam’. It represents two facts. One

is it houses all the five states of Perumal in this Divya Desam, the second fact

is that it houses the Perumal who helps us control our 5 indriyas. The

pushkarani is called as Nambi aaru, ThiruppArkadal, Sindhu nadhi. More than any

other name it is called as ‘Karandam Adu Poigai’ by Azhwars.

This Perumal used to listen to the ghAnam of a great bhkatA called NampAduvAn.

He was born in chandala kulam. He used to play veenai and sing on Perumal every

day. The entire episode of his kaimkaryam to Perumal was told by Perumal Himself

to BhoomiDEvi ThAyar in varAha purAnam.

What is the name of this episode and how did it influence our sampradAyam? We

will enjoy the answers to these questions followed by the strong links to

Azhwars and AchAryAs and the vaibhavam of this Kshetram in the next few

postings.

Before we go to next posting, here is another important fact about this Divya

Desam that has links to purAnas. Other than the links to Azhwars, AchAryAs and

the bhaktA (NampAduvAn), this Perumal was also worshipped by dEvatAs Brahma and

Shivan.

aDiyEn,

ramanan
