With the opportunity of getting upadesam from Swami Ramanujar, Thiruukkurungudi

Divya Desam got the name of ‘Dakshina Badri’. In Badri, Perumal Himself became a

student and did the upadesam to Himself (Narayanan did upadesam to Himself as

naran). Here, Perumal got the upadesam from a naran (Swami Ramanujar). Let us

look into the anubhavam of Thirumazhisai Azhwar on this Divya Desam.

The pushkarani is called as Karandam Adu Poigai. Naradar witnessed the following

incident when he was in Thirukkurungudi,

Karandam, a pakshi (bird) jumped in to the water chanting the name of Perumal.

Immediately, its soul was taken by Vishnu Dhoodars to Paramapadam. Hence the

pushkarani is known as karandam adu poigai (karanda nartana saras).

It is believed that SriVainkutam is close to SriVaikuntam. Thirumazhisai Azhwar

has used the name of the poigai in his pasuram.

Panampazhams (fruit ) fall into this poigai. The fishes in this poigai think

that it is actually a crane that is trying to eat them. Hence they keep flying

in the water. Actually, Nambi cannot be affected by anything. But Azhwars are

very worried that Nambi will be affected by some external factors because of

Drishti (as He is very beautiful and full of kalyana gunams). Azhwar starts with

the poigai ends with the fact that this Perumal was the One who actually took

Narasimha avataram. Here is the beautiful pasuram,

‘karaNdamaadu poykaiyuLka rumpaNnaippe rumpazham, puraNduveezha vaaLaipaayku

Runkudin^e dunthakaay, thiraNdathOLi raNiyansi NnankoLaaka monRaiyum,

iraNdukooRu seydhukandha sinkamenpa thunnaiyE’

Nammazhwar totally enjoyed the beauty of Nambi. Here is an interesting

conversation between him and his friends.

Friends: Why are you always mad of Nambi? Is He so accesible to you?

Azhwar: Yes, pretty much as He is very close to my place (Thirukkurugur). He

lives in Thirukkurungudi

Friends: Is He is so beautiful?

Azhwar: His beauty cannot be explained fully. Azhwar believed that Nambi had

varna kalapam (colour) just to disturb Azhwar more with His most inherent

beauty.

Friends: Understandable, but is He that great?

Azhwar: He is the king of the king of Nityasuris. He is the king of all the

devatas.

Friends: All the above are ok, but what did He do you?

Azhwar: He is my master. The very fact that He has put me in this state (always

thinking about Him) is a great thing that He has done to me.

Now, the friends could not argue with Nammazhwar (Parankusa Nayaki).

Here is the beautiful pasuram,

‘nambiyaiththen kuRungkudi_ninRa, ach chemponEthika zumthirumoorththiyai,

umparvaanava raathiyanchOthiyai, empiraanaiyen chollimaRappanO.’

Nammazhwar did not stop with just this pasuram. He continued to enjoy the beauty

of Nambi in ThiruvAymozhi further. This is a very important concept of worship

that was touched up on later by our Acharyas. We will enjoy that anubhavam in

the next posting,
