Nammazhwar could not stop enjoying Nambi’s beauty. He was completely defeated by

Nambi’s Thirumeni Azhagu. In ThiruvAymozhi 5.5 Nammazhwar enjoys the form of

Nambi. This is an important concept called ‘Uruva Vazhippadu’ or ‘Worship of

Form’. This has been touched upon by Swami Desikan in his work, DramidOpanishad

tAttparya ratnAvali. Swami Manavala Mamunigal also has referred to this concept

in ThiruvAymozhi NootrandhAdhi.

Whenever Nammazhwar closed his eyes, he could completely visualize the beauty of

Nambi. When he opened his eyes, he realized that he was not able to embrace Him.

Nammazhwar’s neighbours are asking him about his love on Nambi. Here is how

Nammazhwar replies them,

‘My heart has gone behind Nambi. If it comes back, I will listen to you all. I

am very sure it will never come back after going behind Nambi. There is no use

in getting angry with me. It is you people who first introduced me to Nambi. The

fault is with you all, and not mine.’

Here is the beautiful pasuram,

Nambi is so beautiful with His sangu and chakram. These are the beauty of His

DivyAyudhams. His eyes are like lotus. The chakram is like sun, and sanghu is

like chandran (moon). When Nambi’s eyes (lotus)see the chakram, they open and

when they see the sanghu (moon) they close. Since they keep doing this

continuosly, Nambi’s eyes are such that whenever we see from any direction it is

as if He sees us. This can even be enjoyed by all of us when we have the darshan

of Nambi. His lips are red in colour.

Azhwar’s heart has gone behind Nambi due to all the all above characteristics.

After enjoying Nambi, Azhwar says that He cannot be understood by anyone, but

one can do so only by His Nirhetuka Krupai. He instructs all of us to worship

Nambi with pushpam and the 10 pasurams. The 10 pasurams tell about the beauty of

various kuris on the Nambi's Thirumeni. If one is able to do the above and

understand the fact that Thirukkurungudi’s greatness is even more than that of

SriVaikuntam (‘ariyakkattru vallAr), that SriVaishnavite will be the one who

will enjoy complete happiness even in the midst of samsara.

Nammazhwar calls Him arivariya pirAn. Another Azhwar says that he has completely

known about Nambi, despite the fact that Vedanta has failed to completely

explain Perumal. He calls Nambi as Perarulalan. Let us look into his anubhavam

in the next posting.
