Dear All,

Pranams!

Since Thirumangai Azhjwar's Thirunakshatram is approaching, aDiyEn would like to

write some intersting aspect that our Acharyas have discussed about this Azhwar.

.............................

AtmAvai veyyilil vaithu udalai nizhalil vaithu....

For the souls that are caught in the worldly pleasures of samsara, there is a

concept of day and night. They keep rotating all through the life span. It is

not the case for a soul that is caught in the Bhagavat anubhavam. For this soul,

there is no concept of night at all. One Azhwar sings beautifully as

‘pagal kandEn nArananaikkandEn’

Vedanta say that ‘sadhA pashyanti soorayaha’, which means it is always bright in

the abode of Perumal. Eventually, there is no darkness.

There was a Chola king, who was very similar to ordinary soul. Similar to us, he

was also immersed worldly pleasure. It is a well known story for all of us about

this king. In the process of his roberry (popularly known as Thirumangai Azhwar

Kaimkaryam in our sampradayam) to build the wall of Srirangam temple, Perumal

and Thayar came in front of him, and eventually by Perumal’s sankalpam,

Thirumangai mannan became Thirumangai Azhwar due to the Thirumantra upadesam.

The entire incident happened under the most gifted arasa maram. This is how it

goes for Azhwar.

Choza nAttu Arasan became an Azhwar by listening to the arasan of all the

mantras from vAn Ilavarasu. He immediately realised that he had kept his AtmA in

veyyil and udal in nizhal earlier, and started singing,

'vAdinEn vAdi....nAdi nAn kandukondEn nArAyanA ennum nAmam'

When Swami Manavalamamunigal visited this place for the first time, He totally

fell prostrating this place and was full of joy.

Like how a king became an Azhwar, the tree got the sambandham with Perumal and

Azhwar.

Other Azhwars were concentrating on paratvam, Vedanta vishayam and all in

difficult ways to comprehend. In particular PeryAzhwar stood out with pongum

parivu, followed by Andal with krishna bhakti and Madhurakavigal with Acharya

bhakti.

All the above are very important concepts in our sampradayam. Our kadaikkutti

Azhwar stood out among the Azhwar Goshti, in his outpourings on Divya Desams

(Archai). A prince always takes a spoon of ghee with every in take of food.

Similarly, our Kaliyan has the speciality for ‘adi thOrum archai’, meaning

finishing with archai Perumal for every pasuram. That is the easiest way for all

of us. If we are able to think about the fact that great Azhwars, Acharyas have

stood before those Perumals and sung loads of pasurams with their beautiful and

hearty words, we could realize how beautiful those Perumals should be. Moreover,

just because they have done mangalasasanams, Perumal’s beauty would have got

multiplied than before.

‘piNtiyAr maNtai Enthip piRarmanai thirithan thuNNum, uNtiyAn sApam theerththa

oruvanoor, ulaka mEththum kaNtiyUr arangkam meyyam kassipEr mallai enRu

maNtinAr, uyyal allAl maRRaiyArk kuyya lAmE?’

More than anything else, unlike Nammazhwar or earlier Azhwars, our Parakalan was

right in calling himself ‘Irunthamizh nool Pulavan’. He was fortunate enough to

know the works of other Azhwars.

Even Perumal was littel scared of our Kaliyan. We cannot easliy get mantra

upadesam from Acharyas. Our Parakalan got it from Perumal with a sword.

aDiyEn,

ramanan
