Guest guest
Sri Parthasarathi thunai Srimathe ramanujaya Namaha Srimad Vara Vara munayE Namaha Sri vAnAchala mahA munayE Namaha Paasuram-49 “malai Amai mEl vaiththu vAsukiyai suRRi talai Amai orukai paRRi-alaiyAmal peeRak kadaindha perumAn thirunAmam kooruvadhE yAvarkkum kooRRu” In the previous paasuram, azhvar talked about the kindness of that lord who stands on top of the mountain and showers his grace on one and all. Now he continues to talk about the benevolence of that lord who lied underneath a mountain and helped the devas. (malai Amai mEl vaiththu) placing the manthra mountain on top of himself in the form of a tortoise. To save the feeble devas emperuman carried the manthra mountain and put it into the ocean (thirupArkadal) to act as an stirrer. Since the mountain started drowning emperuman himself took the form of a tortoise and lifted the mountain with his shell. (vAsukiyai suRRi) Vasuki the big snake was used as the rope to churn the milky ocean. (Amai thAn thalai oru kai paRRi) Though the mountain was lifted by koorma roopi emperuman still while the churning was done the mountain moved this side and that side that affected the result of the stirring process and hence emperuman took the form of another big tortoise and held the top of the mountain strongly in position with his hand. (alaiyAmal peeRak kadaindha) Even after doing so much the devas and asuras were incapable of churning the milky ocean. So emperuman did even that task. (alaiyAmal peeRak kadaindha perumAn) During the churning process emperuman, devAdhi devan arrested the turmoil in the ocean and prevented any overflow due to putting the manthra mountain into the milky ocean and at the same time churned the ocean in such a way that ambrosia (amrutham) aroused out of the milky ocean. By this act emperuman made the whole deva clan surrender to his divine feet. (thirunAmam kooruvadhE yAvarkkum kooRRu) The prime motive of the devas where to attain the divine nectar and become immortal. Hence they are anyaprayOjanas. But emperuman took so much pain even for their sake. So irrespective of we, being anyaprayOjanas (wanting something else) or ananyaprayOjanas (wanting only bhagavat kainkaryam) it is our prime duty to meditate on the divine names of the lord that commend his divine qualities.
