kai/gadha nAgam

nAgam refers to a serpant usually. It also refers to an elephant and is generally prefixed with kai and rarely with gadha --the kai referring to its trunk and gadha referring to anger. The angry pachyderm was none other than GajEndrAzhwAn who was peeved at not being able to win over the crocodile.

Says Thriumangai mannan 'gadha nAgam kAthaLitha Kannar kaNdEr' 4-4-1 of Periya Thirumozhi alluding to the Grace showered by EmperumAn on this jumbo.

Poizhgai AzhwAr also uses this word in the mudhal thiruvandhAdhi.

Counselling that one will realise the Almighty with the right knowledge, -he refers to this event highlighting the fact that EmperumAn is ever ready to rescue when wanted.

'kai nAgam kAthAn kazhal' mudhal thiruvandhAdhi 47.

PeriyAzhwAr who seems to have used all the terms expresses the fact of the hurdle of Sri GajEndhrAzhwAn being removed.

'kainAgathidar kadindh kanalAzhip padaiyudaiyAn karudhum kOil' 4-9-10;

Indicating that Periya PerumAL and Nam-PerumAL are here near us in Thiruvarangam thinking and acting for our welfare. Perhpas, we have to take His services to remove our hurdles Will He do that? That is why the precedent of Sri GajEndrAzhwAn is brought forrth bringing confidence to one and all.
