SlOkam's Benediction:

**********************

JyOthirva: Eethi paryasyAth

May the Mighty Sudarsana JyOthi destroy

all of your sufferings and protect You!

Extended Meaning of the SlOkam :

*********************************

SrI Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar salutes selected

seven attributes of the Sudarsana JyOthi in

this slOkam and prays for that powerful JyOthi

to destroy all samsAric thApams and thereby

protect the suffering jeevans . These seven selected

attributes of the Sudarsana JyOthi among

the countless one are :

1. It is like the precious(ONE) eye for the world

(yEkam lOkasya Chakshu:). It is matchless.

2. It cuts asunder the TWO handcuffs of Paapam

and PuNyam ( dhvividhamapanudhath karma) and

releases the jeevan of both kinds of karmAs.

3. It is worshipped by the THREE eyed Rudran

(Namra ThrinEthram)

4. It blesses the devotee with the FOUR kinds of

PurushArTams( Dharma, Arta, Kaama and Moksham).

5. It destroys the assemblies of (the FIVE kinds of)

enemies( gamayadhariganam panchathAm).

6. It has the SIX guNams such as JnA~nam, Sakthi et al.

(ShaDguNADyam)

7. It pervades all the TEN directions with the red rays

similar to the molten gold ( sapthArchis-sOshithAshtA

padha-navakiraNa srEnirajyath dasAsam).Numbers Seven

(SapthArchi) , Eight (sOshithAshtA) , nine (nava kiraNa)

and ten ( dasAsam) are included in this masterly

poetic construction by the Sudarsana UpAsakar.

8. In the benediction part ,SATHAM ( 100) and SAHASRAM (1000)

are woven in ( paryasdhvas-SathAngAvayava pariBruDa JyOthireethis-

SAHASRAM . The benediction is for us to be protected by

this mighty Sudarsana JyOthi with hundreds of angams

and thousands of Flames !

This is a powerful slOkam , where the poetic skills of

Sri Koora NaarAyaNa Jeeyar is abundantly evident. Only

the ParipoorNa anugraham of Sudarsana BhagavAn can lead

to the creation of such a masterly slOkams.

Additional Notes:

******************

SrI SthalatthuRaivAr Swamy has commented that this

slOkam might have inspired Swamy Desikan to model

the fifth slOkam of Garuda PanchAsath (yEkO VishNu:).

Let me elaborate on this observation further:

Swamy Desikan went a few steps beyond Sri Koora NaarAyana

Jeeyar and included beyond the counts of one to Sahasram by

including Lak , Crore and beyond in his count of

the countless guNams of Garuda BhagavAn :

" YEKO VishNOr-DHVIDHIYAS-THRI-CHATHURA

vidhitham PANCHAvarnee rahasyam

SHAADGUNYA smEra SAPTHA svara gathir-

aNimdhyASHTA sampan-NAVAATHMAA

DevO dharveekarArir-DASA-SATHA nayanArAthi

----SrI Garuda PanchAsath SlOkam : Fifth SlOkam

Comments on the Fifth SlOkam of Garuda PanchAsath

*************************************************

The majestic SragdhrA metre was again used by

Swamy Desikan for housing this tribute and

prayer to Garuda BhagavAn.The prayer is for

Garuda Bhagavan of infinite power and Vaibhavam

to remove our SamsAric Bheethi ( DevO na: bhayam

vigaDayathu).

Here Swamy Desikan identifies Garudan's matchless

glories equalling that of His Lord ( yEkO VishNu:).

He recognizes the SankarshaNa Moorthy Svaroopam

of Garudan with the word " DHVITHIYA: " (Lord SankarshaNan

is the Second VyUha Moorthy).

He shifts to Garuda Manthram , which is known

to three or four ( a few): " THRI-CHATHURA VIDHITHAM " .

Thus numbers three and Four are covered here.

Of the esoteric Garuda manthram with FIVE letters ,

Swamy Desikan salutes it as " PANCHA VARNEE RAHASYAM " .

This was the family manthram of SrI NigamAntha

MahA Desikan , which gained him Garuda and HayagrIva

SaakshAthkAram at ThiruvahIndhrapuram.

That Garuda BhagavAn has the SIX GuNams of His Master

is indicated by the salutation: ShADguNya smEra:

His speed and movement like the SAPTHA svarams is

remememberd by the salutation : SAPTHA Svara gathi:

Garudan is the abode of Saama Vedam adorned with

SAPTHA Svarams.

That Garudan has the EIGHT kinds of Isvaryams/Power

like aNimA, mahimA, lagimA , garimA , vasithvam,

Isvaryam, prApthi and prakAmyam is indicated

by " aNimAdhi ASHTA sampath " .

That Garudan has newer and newer forms is recognized by

the salutation : NAVA AATHMAA.

The numbers Ten , hundred , thousand , lak and crore

are cleverly woven in visualizing Garudan battling

the thousand eyed ( DASA SAHASRA NAYANA), Indhran

during the bringing of nectar from Svarga lOkam to

free His(Garudan's ) mother form bondage. Indhran

saw the fast moving Garudan as thousands & laks of

combatants ( AarAthi SAHASRA LAKASHE) and hitting him

(Indhran) with crores of sharp wing feathers ( Paksha

KODI Veetha Sankhya:)and defeating him(Indhran)

in that battle for Nectar .

Swamy Desikan following his prededcessor prays for

the protection of the Jeevans suffering from SamsAric

afflictions.

SrI Vijayavalli SamEtha SrI Sudarsana ParabrahmaNE Nama:

(PraNavam) ShaD kONa dhAmAya Nama:

Daasan , Oppiliappan Koil VaradAchAri SadagOpan

P.S: May SrI Sudarsana and Garuda BhagavAns protect

the RathnAngi Kaimkaryam to their Lord and light

the way for the participation of the many bhakthAs

of their Lord blessing us at ThiruvahIndhrapuram

as SrI DEvanAthan.
