Dear BhakthAs:

Back at SrIrangam , NamperumAL acted today in the role of MUmukshu

(One who is desirous of Moksham) and showed us the way by entering

SrI Vaikunta (Paramapadha ) Vaasal after traveling via ArchirAdhi maargam .

With RathnAngi and Simha Gathy , He arrived at the Thousand pillared Mantapam

to initate IrAppatthu ThiruvAimozhi Uthsavam .

Pahal Patthu Uthsavam

*****************************

During the Pahal Patthu uthsavam that preceded the Iraa Paathu

Uthsavam , NamperumAL blessed us with alankArams including

Vaira Mudi , Paandya KoNDai , Chavari KoNDai . On the last day of

Pahal Patthu , He competed with His DEvi by taking Mohini

AlankAram . The parrot in His(Her) hand , the dhrushti pottu (I(dot) ,

the ANDAL KoNDai on His siras and the folded legs did not fool

Swamy ParAsara Bhattar and this AchAryan commented that

Mohini can not surpass the feminine charm of NamperumAL's

divine consort , SrI RanganAyaki .

(All the SrI Vaikunta EkAdasi related sevais at SrIrangam as well

as the Special Thirumanjanam for Lord VaradarAjan are available in

a special CD ROM for your enjoyment) .

During the Pahal patthu days , when all dhivya Prabhandhams other than

ThiruvAimozhi and IyaRppA are recited during the day time (Pahal) ,

Special Arayar SEvai takes place and NamperumAL displays

Simha Gathy , OyyAra Nadai , Sarpa gathi , VyAgra and Rishabha

gathis during arrival from His aasthAnam and return back there .

Arayar SEvai

****************

The Arayar Sevai at SrIrangam has links with Thirumangai

AzhwAr , Swamy Naathamuni, Swamy AlavanthAr and

AchArya RaamAnujA . Arayar Sevai is known as Mutthamizh

Kalai KoNDAttam ( The three dimensioned art celebration).

The three dimensions are : (1) Singing of Swamy NammAzhwAr's

and other AzhwAr's selected Paasurams with appropriate PaNNs/

Raagams (2) Performing abhinayam for the Paasuram passages

and (3) GIving the meaning of those Paasurmas followign TambirAn

Padi. This is the equivalent of Iyal, Isai and Naatakam

of Tamil art tradition . This Arayar Sevai splits further in to two parts :

(1) PerumAL KONDAttam and (2) NaacchiyAr KoNDAttam .

Iraa Patthu

*************

On this day of SrI Vaikunta EkAdasi , NamperumAl gives up His Mohini

alankAram of the previous day and reverts to His own masculine ,

bewitching dhivya soundharyam ; He clads the RathnAngi and arrives for

His DarbhAr at the 1000 Pillar ManTapam to have His bhOgam with

ParAnkusa Naayaki and to hear Thiruvaimozhi for the next few days .

Meykalatthal or MokshOthsavam

****************************************

The spot light shifts now to Swamy NammAzhwAr/ParAnkusa

Naayaki. In the final day of Iraa Patthu, NamperumAL will bless

Swamy NammAzhwAr with Moksham .

At SrI RanganAtha Temple , Pomona , N.Y we celebrated

Swamy NammAzhwAr Moksham in a grand manner last

Sarurday . adiyEn presented a small viNNappam to Lord

RanganAtha on the vaibhavam of Swamy NammAzhwAr's

four Dhivya Prabhandhams in general and the ten decads of

ThiruvAimozhi in particular. adiyEn referred to the brilliant

summary of Swamy Desikan on the essence of the ten decads

of ThiruvAimozhi ( from Taathparya RathnAvaLi SlOkam ). Here is

the gist of that presentation before Lord RanganAthA as

Swamy NammAzhwAr was completely covered under a huge assembly of

TuLasi leaves awaiting the granting of His Saayujya MOksham from NamperumAL .

The shifting Moods of Swamy NammAzhwAr in His four Prabhandhams

***************************************************************************************

The First Prabhandham of Swamy NammAzhwAr is Thiruviruttam . It is linked

traditionally to the essence of the prayers of Rg Vedam. His mood is that of

Para Bhakthi . The Paasurams connect to the PraNavam and " Namas "

sabdham of AshtAksharam . The Mukhya Vishayam of Thiruviruttham is

Swamy NammAzhwAr's statement to the Lord that SamsAra Dukkham

is unbearable .There are 100 Paasurams in thsi Prabhandham .

In the second Prabhandham of ThiruvAsiriyam , which is considered as

the essence of Yajur Vedam , SaThakOpar's mood shifts to Para Jn~Anam.

The link is to the NaarAyaNa sabdham of AshtAksharam . The quintessence

(Mukhya Vishayam ) of this Prabhandham is about the aanandhAnubhavam

due to the Prathyaksham of the Lord and singing about that anubhavam

in a raptourous state. There are 7 paasurams in the second prabhandham.

In the third prabhandham , Periya ThiruvandhAthi , the links are to the mood of

Parama Bhakthi and GeethAchAryan's Charama SlOkam . The Mukhya Vishayam

here is Swamy NammAzhwAr's expression of His insatiable desire to unite with

the Lord . This is considered a condensation of AtharvaNa Vedam. There are 87

Paasurams in this third Prabhandham.

The Fourth Prabhandham is ThiruvAimozhi , the essence of Saama Vedam.

The mood is that of PrApthi (attainment of the desired boon and arrival at

SrI Vaikuntam for Nithya Kaimkaryam and ParipoorNa BrahmAnandham) .

The rahasyam linked to this Prabhandham is Dhvayam (Dheerga SaraNAgathy).

In the mood of joining the Lord , Swamy Desikan experinces alternatively

VislEsham ( seperation form the Lord ) and SamslEsham ( union with the Lord).

Finally , AzhwAr is granted Saayujya Moksham ( ThiruvAimozhi: 10.10 ).

There are 1102 Paasurams in the final prabahandham of Swamy NammAzhwAr.

Swamy Desikan's Summary of the uniqueness of each of the four Prabhandhams

*************************************************************************************************

aadhyE svasya prabhandhE SaThajith abhidhadhE samsruthE: Dussahathvam

dhvaitheeyakE SvaroopAdhi akhilam aTa HarE: anvabhUth spashtasdhrushtam

ThArtthIyakE savkeeyam BhagavadhanubhavE sphOrayAmAsa theevrAm aasAm

ThuryE yaTEshtam BhagavadhanubhavAth aapa mukthim SaThAri :

AaadhyE ( in the First prabahandham) , AzhwAr cried out about the unbearable

nature of SamsAram ( samsruthE: dussahathvam abhidhadhE ).

DhavitheeyakE (in the second prabhandham) , AzhwAr was able to enjoy the Svaroopa-

GuNa -VibhUthis of the Lord as a result of gaining Para Jn~Anam.

ThArttheeyikE (in the third prabahandham) , Azhwar expressed his great longing

to enjoy the Lord and have His samslEsham/union( " Bhagavad anubhavE

svakeeyam theevrAm aasAm sphOrayAmAsa " ) .

ThuryE ( in the fourth prabhandham ) , AzhwAr enjoyed the Lord to his heart's

content and attained Moksham ( ThuryE yaTEshtam BhagavadhanubhavAth

aapa mukthim SaThAri: ).

The Ten decads(Patthus) of the Fourth Prabhandham: ThiruvAimozhi

*********************************************************************************

The genius of Swamy Desikan in distilling the essence of each of

the ten decads is abundantly evident in the following Taathparya

RathnAvaLi slOkam :

Gathim vyadhvak-klEsascchidham apadhAsankAspadharasam

bhajadhbhi: suprApam vividha bhajana prakriyAmiha

PhalE theevROdhyOgam sva-vishaya-kruthaathyAdhAram

yadrucchA-tushtam sath-saraNim apunar-janma saayujyam

The GuNams of the individual ten decads are then :

1) Gathim : He is the Gathi(ParamAm gathi) .

2) Vyadhva-klEsacchidham ( One who removes the fears associated with

the dushta mArgams and deflects us in to sanmArgam).

3) Apadha-sankhAspadha-rasam ( One who has the power to remove the fear

about the upadhravams caused by asthAnam/improper approaches) .

4) Bhajadhbhi: SuprApam ( Easy to attain by those , who worship Him ,

Bhajana Sulabhan)

5) Vividha Bhajana prakriyAm ( the object of different aspects of

Bhakthi yOgam ).

6) PhalE theevrOdhyOgam ( deeply engaged in granting the fruits that

one seeks ).

7) Sva-vishaya-kruthAthyAdhAram ( Most compassionate towards those,

who engage in meditation about Him ).

8) yadhrucchA-thushtam ( Sathya Kaaman , He who is fully conteneted

within Himself).

9) SathsaraNi ( One who becomes the sanmArgam of ArchirAdhi path).

10) apunarjanma saayujyan ( One who has as His wealth the Muktha Jeevan ,

who has no more Janmams in the Karma BhUmi ).

In the 10.9 ThiruvAimozhi , "Soozh VisumpaNi mukhil " , the aanandha kOlAhalam

of the Lord as AzhwAr ascends to His Parmama padham using the auspicious ladder

(sath saraNi) of archirAdhi mArgam ( the pathof light ).

In the ten paasurams of ThiruvAimozhi 10.10 , " MuniyE NaanmuhanE MukkaNNappA " ,

our Lord reveals Himself as the grantor of Moksham to enjoy ParipoorNa

BrahmAnandham by the Muktha Jeevan .

This indeed is the Vaibhavam of Thiru Adhyayana Uthsavam that is

being enjoyed at SrIrangam and all other Dhivya dEsams .
