Guest guest
SrI: SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah: Dearest Srivaishnavas, Let us begin to enjoy the majestic wonderful prabandhams of Thirumazhisai AzhwAr, namely Thirucchandhaviruttham. There are 120 PAsurams. adiyEn's pErAsai (greed) to complete the free translation of these 120 verses based on beautiful vyAkhyAnam written by Sri UttamUr Swamy.. [Please forgive errors and omission in my rambling; it is only due to my lack of udnerstanding, laick of Snaksirt, Tamil and English language skills:-( bhU^nilaaya vainthumaayp punaRkaN_n^inRa naan_gumaay, theen^ilaaya moonRumaaych siRandhakaa liraNdumaay, meen^ilaaya thonRumaagi vERuvERu thanmaiyaay, neen^ilaaya vaNNan^innai yaarn^inaikka vallarE? (1) In this dhivya Prabhandham , AzhwAr refers to the Tattva- Hitha-PurushArthams in his first three paasurams respectively.. All things in this world are formed by five elements basic- called pancha bhUthAs. Earth, water, fire, air and ether (AkAsA). You are the antharAthmA in those five elements, organs, - etc.. and also the indweller of Chethanaas and achEthanAs- and are still never touched by their imperfections – the way – YOU stand (as AthmA in all of them)- as Sareera SarIri bhAvam- except for those TRUE VedAnthins, who else can comprehend You? bhU nilAya aindhumaay -The five materials, the five great elements, the five sensory organs, etc., and the mind (manas) punal kaN ninRa naangumaay- - there is rasam (taste in waters) etc.. like (rasam, gandham, sparsam, sabdam) thee nilaa moonRumaay- the roopam (form) that is in Fire.. thus.. sparsam (touch), sabdham (sound) and thEjas (luster) added to that is Rasam which is in waters; added to fragrance- it is pruthvI- earth Thus vaavyu- from Space; Fire from Vaayu; Water from Fire and Earth from waters Further there are five subtle elements (tanmaathrAs)- these are sound (sabda), touch (sparsa), form or sight (roopa), taste (rasa) and smell (gandha). These subtle elements are intermediate stages between two gross (or basic elements- Bhuthas) like earth, water etc. [this is what described above by AzhwAr]. We experience these. i.e. sound, touch, form, taste and smell through out indriyas (senses) i.e. ear, skin, eye, mouth and nose. These are called jnAna indriyas. We hear sound through our ears, etc…(and get jnAnam- knowledge about the subject). The five senses or indriyas of action are called karma indriyas which are organs of speech, hand, leg, organ of excretion, and of reproduction, making up total of ten indriyas. The eleventh is mind or manas. Thus from prakrithi, mahath is formed. Ahankaaram is formed from mahath. This ahankaaram is divided into three called Satva, Rajas and thamas ahankaaram. From Saatvika ahankaaram- the eleven indriyas (including mind) and from thaamasa ahankaram, comes the pancha bhUthas (earth, water etc.._). That is: thaamasa ahankaaram- sabdha thanmaathram- AkAsam (ether)- sparsathanmaathram- vaayu (air)-roopa thanmaathram – fire (thEjas)- rasathanmaathram- jalam (waters)- gandhathanmaathram- bhUmi (earth) etc. are formed. That is the sequence. These five elements constitute the whole physical prabanjam(cosmic universe). In other words, all these are His and belong to Sriman Narayanan. There was nothing before creation, neither world nor skies; before creation, there was only Sriman Narayanan, the Paramaathma. From Him, came the Akaasa (space); All things and being emanated from Him (as per Lor’d sankalpam- free will) and end up in Him; from AkAsA- spring PrANa, manas, indriyas, agni, water, and the base for the world (prithvI). thEjas was born and there was urge to multiply. BrahmA was created and he (with the Lord as indweller in him) using Vedas and scriptures, created names and forms… The body consisting of these five elements and the eleven indriyas) all of the above and the soul that is housed in the body- The Lord is the indweller and enables them to act as antharyami. Sri Bhagawath Ramanuja darsanam- inspired from AzhwArs and Acharya’s works – establishing the Sareera sarIri bhAvam- which is the proprietary (pradhAna prathithanthram) of VisishtAdvaita- is the doctrine that solves all contradictions of Vedic statements. This is based on Ghataka sruthi.. Who else but these Vedanthins can comprehend You?- says AzhwAr. BhUthas are objects and hence are Lord’s sareera. Thus, sicne they are His Body, they are none other than He can also be inferred. BhUthas properties though can not be called as “He”, those properties have arisen due to His granting the same to BhUthas (elements). For example, the color blue also denotes the object whose colour is blue. Thus, the sparsa, rasa, gandha etc.. also denote Sriman Narayanan- ParamAthmA, extending the same sareera sarreri bhAvam. Sriman Narayanan is the supporter (AdhAram) of these five elements and thus those attributes of the elements as well (namely- rasa, gandha etc..) [this is all decribed in rasO(S)hamapsU- GitA sloka]. This can also be perceived and understood after having learnt Bhashyam and thaathparyachandhrikA from an acharya. Thus, in one verse, AzhwAr establishes the VisishtAdavita siddhAntham in an unambiguous manner and crystal clear form. There is nothing that moves without His sankalpam (or will); In other words, avananRi OraNuvum asaiyaadhu.. AzhwAr says: only vedaanthins can comprehend you. Sri Uttamur swamy writes: Those who have learnt Vedas (and understood them) and also these Tamil Vedas can only comprehend you. Else, one will talk: Brahman alone is sathyam; everything else is false; OR Brahman is different; jeevathmas, BhUthas, are all different; The guNAs (attributes) of these jeevan, bhUthas can not be in Brahman etc.. All this is possible and are housed in Sriman Narayanan. Unity in diversity (with SareerAthma bhAvam) established by Bhagavath Ramanuja in his wonderful Sri sookthis commented based on all Vedic statements without violating any. (taking the cue from Tamil Vedas as well.)
