Thirucchandhaviruttham 20th verse- Why did You recline as Tortoise below that moutain - what a sowseelyam!

SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah:

Dearest srivaishnavas,

 

He reclined on PaaRkadal (Milky coean) being praised

by the Devas. AzhwAr now wonders how were You able to

apprear as lowly being as Tortoise!- in this verse.

 

Koosam onRum inRi maasuNam paduththu vElaineer

pEsaninRa dEvar vandhu paada mun kidanthathum

paasam ninRa neerilvaazhum aamaiyaana kEsavaa,

Esa anRu nee kidanthavaaRu kooRu thERavE. 20.

 

Oh KoormAvathAra Adhi Devaa! Kesavaa! The chief of

BrahmA and Rudran! You appeared as Tortoise that lives

in waters! You ¡V without any fear- recelined on the

great AdhisEshan as Bed on the milky coean- praised by

all Devas assembled along with Chathurmukha BrahmA and

Rudran [who all are talked about by people as ¡§gods¡¨

] addressing You as Supreme Lord. Not just that, after

that without any inhibition, without feeling ashamed

or shy- without any airs about the lowly nature of the

avathAram- being looked down upon for having taken as

KoormAvathAram- You lied down. Please tell me to make

me understand why and how.

 

Koosam onRum inRi- Without any fear-that the magic

asurAs would arrive and put him in danger when He is

having His Yoga nithrA on PaaRkadal (Milky ocean);

Even when He reclines on the fiery eyed- fiery mouthed

AdhisEshan Huge snake; even when He kept His eyes

closed for ages after ages; even when the soft tender

fingers of Periya PiraaTTi Mahalakshmi touches the

lotus feet of the Lord (no koosam); even when he

thinks that inspite of the aprAkrutha Paramapadham,

why do I still reside here in prAkrutha milky ocean-

no such koosam;- there van be many such statements.

 

pEsa ninRa- Devas, Rudran are all being talked about

and mentioned by people as Gods; and they themselves

praise Him at PaaRkadal as Supreme Lord! (Kesavaa)

[similar to Pesa ninRa sivanukkum piraman thanakkum-

Thiruvaaymozhi]

 

vElai neer- the ocean roars and the roar and praise

rhyme and are equal. [The ocean also praises so

loudly]

 

paasa ninRa- paasam ninRa- He considers the waters

where He appeared as Kooramam more dear than the milky

ocean. Such a sowlabhyan is He.

 

After being praised by everyone at paaRkadal, the Lord

appeared as Tortoise being looked down upon during

KoormAvathAram for having taken a lowly being form ¡

yEsa kidanathathu; [just opposite of what they were

doing in Milky ocean where they were praising the

Lord]

 

Without losing Your Parathvam, You were getting

praised by Devas at PaaRkadal. Here in deep waters

lying down as Koormam holding the huge mountain on

Your back; with such a sowseelyam and sowlabhyam-

being looked down upon by Devas and asuRAs as a mere

being. Wherever the mountain went, the Tortoise went

there to hold; what a sowlseelyam to have undergone

such deeds for the sake of Asrithars.

 

Even though You did all work of holding the tip of the

mountain to prevent it from tilting; pulling and

churning the rope; as well as holding the mountain on

His back; Paramsulabhan are You.

 

Only You need to tell Me to make me understand the way

You appeared as Koormam and why. Is it because You

were pelasec to perform any action for the sake of

Asrithars?
