Dearest Srivaishnavas,

[Hereafter AzhwAr enjoys few VaamanaavathAra pAsurams]

kankain^eer_pa yanthapaadha

pankayaththem maNNalE,

ankaiyaazhi sankuthaNdu

villumvaaLu mEnthinaay,

sinkamaaya thEvathEva!

thEnulaavu menmalar,

mankaimanni vaazhumaar_pa!

aazhimEni maayanE! (24)

My Swami [em aNNalE]! The One who has beautiful red

lotus feet that made Ganges waters! The One who holds

divine ChakrA, white Conch Shell, KaumOdhaki gadhA,

and Saarngam (Bow), Sword etc in His resplendent

beautiful hands! Simgam Aya DhEvaa! Narasinga

perumAnE! The One who has the divine Chest as the

permament eternal residence of Periya PiraaTTi Sri

Mahalakshmi- seated on tender fresh lotus flowers

where bees loiter, and hum! Oh most wonderful

(athyAscharya) blue black ocean like dark complexioned

Lord!

This verse can continue to next pAsuram- hence we will

take now in this post for the sake of completion. [OR

we can also change the word Azhi mEni maayanE! as

Maarbha vaazhi! Long live on divine chested with

Thirummaarbhaa!]

Firt line- the Vaamanan grows to Thrivikraman- When He

grew so tall and huge talking Trivikarama avatHAram-

Chathur mukha BrahmA grabbed the opportunity to wash

his sins by talking his kamaNdalu and offered to the

small portion of toe-thumb tip (that reached him in

Brahma lOkam) and the when the waters were not

sufficient, Dharma dEvathai offered herself as waters

to flow down to wash the lotus feet and the waters

that is offered flows down from the Lotus feet to

Siva's matted locks and then to the earth as Ganges!

(Read Bhageerthan incident in Srimad Ramayanam);

Water that touched the tip of the thumb in the lotus

feet becomes the cared Ganges.. and Sivan purified

himself by taking the waters on his head.

Em aNNalE! With no prayers or efforts, all the

residents of Bhali witnessed the glorious Trivikraman

and everyone was blessed by getting touched by the

Lotus feet that grew on the ground. [kadhaa punas

sanka.. ¡ SthOthra Rathnam- by Alavandhar-]

Hence Lord established His Swamithvam by taking the

avathAram [kaaNmeergaL ulagattheerE enRu kaNmugappE

nimirndha- says NammAzhwAr in Thiruvaymozhi] and

hence becomes swami for all of us- em annaLE! Our

swami!

When he grew so tall, naturally every limb and hence

the Ayudhas also were so magnificent and huge; They

were so charming and beautiful to enjoy looking at

them on those beautiful resplendent hands. [one can

enjoy all these in Thiruvaymozhi- PerumA neeL padai-

Thiruvaymozhi 1.10-1 and Azhiyezha sankhum villumezha

¡ Andam mOzhai yezha ¡ ulagam kOndavaaRE..

Thiruvaymozhi 7.4.1]

How were five Ayudhas held in four hands? Villum

vaaLum (bow and Sword) are uttered together with a

um¡¨ and hence can be considered to be in one hand.

Same thing for next pAsurams also.

Also in VaamanaavathAram, PiraaTTi was hidden

(intentionally- as he is a Brahmachari- Bachelor; and

PiraaTTi would not let Bhali get defeated probably]

and hence AzhwAr takes Narasingan and mentions

PiraaTTi for everone not to assume that Prahlada came

first and PiraaTTi was scared to go near Him etc.. as

She lives with Him for ever in the divine Chest- says

Sri UttamUr Swamy.

[as mentioned earlier- let us continue with another

PAsuram today for the sake of completeness]

varaththiNnil siraddhaimikka vaaLeyiRRu maRRavan,

Let us enjoy NarasimhAvathAram in detail

HiraNyakasipu- who was having complete faith [on

the boon that was given to him by Chathumukha BrahmA;

- the asurA who has shining teeth; the enemy -was

destroyed by You; You pressed your sharp nails from

your divine hands on his strong chest and killed him;

Such greatest and grand Lord- You took a small

Brahmachari boy form and begged for three measures of

earth by your feet? What is this? (idhu enna?) The

worlds that you obtained from Bhali by begging You

retained them and hid them in Your little stomach

during cosmic dissolution (mahA praLayam). Thse

wonders- matvels- are all hosued in Your athyAscharya

Lordship! Who knows what is there in Your mind

(ThiruvuLLam)?

Hiranyakasipu thought that with his boon obtained from

BrhmA that he would not be killed by human, devas,

animals, et al; not in day, night; not inside; nor

outside; not by any weapons; nor by hands; and many

such conditions- all of which was adhered to by Lord

Narasimhan and still He killed the asurA].

Brahmaa's father is our Lord; asurA did not know

that: He is not shrewed and did not know who was

Supreme? He had pride about his strength about the

boon. Not violating any of the conditions, NrusimhA

killed the asurA effortlessly with his sharp nails.

He touched the heart (chest) with his hand to check if

He actually has any bhakti and if he has any love for

His devotee Prahalada. Having found none; He

pressed His sharp nails. - enjoys AzhwAr.

HiraNyakasipu asked:

Oh Prahalada, if He is there everywhere, why is He not

here- present in this pillar? Let me cut your head and

let me see how your most worshippable Lord comes to

protect you. With terrible anger, hiraNyakasipu struck

his fist against the pillar.

aLanthitta thooNai avan thatta AngE vaLarndhittu

vALugirrch singavuruvaay/

.... (PeriyAzhwAr Thirumozhi)

THERE APPEARED FROM THE PILLAR, CAME A fierceful

sound, which appeared to crack the covering of the

universe. It reached even the abodes of Brahma.

Demi-gods thought the planets are getting destroyed.

Sri NammAzhwAr's ThiruvAymozhi describes wonderfully:

" engum uLan KaNNan enRa maganik kaayndhu/

inghu illaiyaa? enRu iraNiyan thooN pudaippa,

" anghu " , " appozhudhE " avan veeyat thOnRiya

" en " Singapiraan perumai aarayum seermaitthE..

what an anubhavam and emotional narration of MaaRan..!

Prahalada says.. enghum uLan. (KaNNan is there

everywhere) IraNiyan asks " inghu illaiyaa? (is He not

here?) The Bhagawathas say " He is everywhere.

The athiest asks in negative. Bhagawatha is

affirmative and positive.

anghu- (Then and there..-Immediately), appozhudhE,

avan veeyatthOnRiya..

what a word! en- My Singapiraan- ennudaiya

Singapiraan- My Lord Nrusimhan-

ArAyum seermaitthE- Can His graetness be measured and

comprehended? (Never)

HiraNyakasipu studied the form of the Lord:

It was extremely fearsome, because of His angry eyes,

like molten gold, shining mane, which added ferocity

to the face, His deadly sharp teeth, His razor sharp

tongue, the erect ears, the cave like nostrils and the

mouth, slightly parted jaws, the whole body so huge

that it touched the sky, short neck and thick, broad

chest, thin waist and the body hairs like the rays of

moon. Long arms spread in all directions;

Just a small insect falls forcefully into the fire,

the insignificant creature becomes invisible,

HiraNyakasipu attacked the Lord, who was full of

effulgence. Like Garuda plays with the snake

by slowly releasing and again catching, the Lord left

him a little by letting him come back to fight;

HiraNyakasipu thought he is winning.

Making a huge noise, shrill sound of laughter, the

Great Lord Sri Narasihman who is extremely strong and

powerful, captured HiraNyakasipu, and with the great

speed, He hit him on the strong chest. With great

speed, HiraNyakasipu was tossed sometimes in the sky

and sometimes in the earth, he kept his eyes closed

because of fear of the Lord and His laughter.

Lord Sri Narasingan placed HiraNyakasipu on His lap

supporting him with His thighs, in the doorway, at

twilight and effortlessly and very easily tore open

the demon to pieces with His sharp nails.

Lord Sri Narsimhan's mouth and mane were sprinkled

with blood, His fearsome, fierce eyes, full of anger,

were just impossible to look at. Licking the edge of

the mouth with his tongue, simply threw the body

aside.

Manifesting a full effulgence, He roamed in the

corridors, being very angry. He sat down on the

assembly hall on the throne. No one, out of fear could

dare come near except Prahalada.

Brahma requested Prahalada, Sri Narasimhan is

extremely angry and fearsome at Your father. Please go

to Him and only You can appease Him. He appeared only

for You. (Naturally, four faced Brahma is very scared;

because he only had granted such a boon to

HiraNyakasipu).

Prahalada gradually (A devotee is not at all scared of

the Lord) went to Him and fell down prostrating at His

Feet to pay His obeisance.

The Lord (with angry eyes) looked with great dayA and

compassion to Prahalada (what a combination! Only he

can have such fierceful, merciful eyes simultaneously)

He became ecstatic to see His devotee and placed His

Lotus Hand on the head of Prahalada. Prahalada became

completely freed of all contamination (if any

existed), and his heart was full of Parama bhakti.

Although the Lion is very ferocious, it is very kind

to her cubs. Although fearsome, and fierceful (to

HiraNyakasipu- non devoted People), Sri Narsimhan is

very kind and merciful to devotees.

Oh Narasimhaa! You are sarva sakthan. When You have

decided to protect someone, is there any need to look

for someone else? And should You decide Not to save

one, is there anyone who can save him at all?

Realising that, I surrender to You Lotus Feet only.

Swami Desikan's Kaamaasikaashtakam (slOka 8):

[please forgive me for the digression- I lost myself

in Nrusimha avathAram]

When You can destroy so well on the asurA, where is

this Bhali? You could have finished him off easily! Or

resolved the crisis in different effortless manner!

Instead You went begging as small dwarf boy! What a

wonder! What a sowlabhyam! Whose property! Who is

begging! Why should You stoop down so low and beg? The

Lord who has divine MahAlakshmI in His divine Chest!

And He goes begging for a property! What is this!

Idhenna- asks AzhwAr (in third line)

Such a You, who took huge form to measure the worlds;

You placed all that in Your little stomach in your

infant form (You could have done that even for Bhali

and showed your Parathvam); why did You beg? You place

the worlds and protect them and hence the worlds are

Your property as always. Why should You beg?

You let Yoruself as the sEsham (servitude) for Your

devotee (being a deriver for Arjunan) and what is the

wonder in considering Your property as if it is

other¡¦s- is that what You thought? Those who are

enemy to You, Your Parathvam and those who are devoted

to You- You show Your modesty ¡V sowlabhyam and stand

infront of them like a child so easily accessible for

them to hug and take You. You have become the

repository of all such wonderful mysteries, Oh

KrishNA! Who can comprehend all such wonderful deeds

of Yours! None can.
