Thirucchandhaviruttham 35th verse- You have become My Lord [Piraan] also! what a sowlabhyam!

SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah:

 

Dearest Srivaishnavas,

 

AzhwAr wondered in last PAsuram as to how the Lord was

to be born as cowherd Boy! The Lord asks: what is the

big deal of being born as human being; when I took

avathArams even as animals namely, Fish, Tortoise and

Boar.. AzhwAr responds in this PAsuram:

 

ampulaavu meenumaagi aamaiyaagi aazhiyaar

thampiraanumaagi mikkadhu anbumikkathu anRiyum

kompu araavu nuN marungul aayarmaadhar piLLaiyaay

empiraanum aayavaNNam en kolO em eesanE! (35)

 

em IsanE! Our Lord! My Master! You appeared as Fish

(mathsyam) living in waters; also as Tortoise; But

still You were considered as Grand and Supreme as the

Lord with the divine ChakrA only even in those births;

You have such greatest vaathsalyam on us and take such

births; However,, You took birth as the child of the

creeper like narrow waisted cowherd woman and became

our darling Lord- in the most merciful manner! Why is

that so?

 

You appeared as fish, tortoise etc.. But never called

as baby of this fish or child of that Tortoise; But

when born as cowherd Boy, Your parents were identified

and glorified. You were praised for having stayed

inside that cowherd woman’s stomach for ten months and

be addressed as her darling son, while actually you

were born of Devaki PiraaTTi due to her great penance!

Why did you have to be so- being addressed as YasOdhai

iLan~chingam (lion cub of YasOdhA)? Thinking of it- I

can know only one reason: it is only to enchant and

steal the hearts of people like me.. no other reason.

 

Azhiyaar- even the Ayudha raaka- the king of all

AyudhAs- ChakrA. His Lord is Sriya: Pathi.

Or it may mean – ChakrA and others (Sankhu, GadhA,

etc..) Lord of NithyasUris.

 

Even during mathsya, koorma avathArams, He is Sankha

chakrA dhAri- Sriman Narayanan in His grandest form-

though born as animal.

 

ampulAvum- Loitering in waters- Though this can be

referred to both mathsyam and Koormam, this word is

referred to only mathsyam because during

mathsyAvathAram, He (the Lord as fish) was there in

the king Sathyavrathan’s anjali (folded hands) during

argyam in the river of Kruthamaalai, in the vessel

(kalasam), pot, the huge pond, the deep huge ocean

etc.. Hence the word is more appropriate for the

masthyam than for Koormam.

 

Kombu arAvu- creeper and snake (kombum + arAvum) –

same as kombaraavu nuNNEridai maarbhanai-

Thiruvaaymozhi 1.10.3). One can say: Where was He in

the stomach of YasOdhA? That is false. Okay, But can

one deny His residing on Her narrow waist (marungul)?

That can never be questioned. He never grew up like

the fish or Tortoise. This keeping Him on the waist

was not only enjoyed by YasOdhA; but by all cowherd

women (and hence addressed as Ayarmaadhar)

 

Em piraan- After having been subjected to the

illiterate women of cowherd women as their darling-

being even tied down by them- we too are confident

that we can approach You with no apprehension and with

a hope that You would consider us as well- seeing your

sowlabhyam.

 

OR like rishis and other AzhwArs I am also born and

hence em piraan (our Lord) - says AzhwAr.
