Dearest Srivaishnavas,

kaaytthaneeL viLankani uthirtthethirntha poonkurundhu

(dham)

saaytthu maa piLantha kaitthalattha kaNNan enparaal

aaychchipaalai uNdu maNNai uNdu veNNey uNdu, pin

pEychchi paalai uNdu paNdOr ENnamaaya vaamaNnaa!

(37)

Or yEnam Aya vaamanaa! The Lord who appeared as Huge

Boar at the beginning of kalpam! Vaamanaa! The One who

(during this avathAram of KaNNan) drank the breast

milk of YasOdhai; ate the sand (in the streets- like

an ordinary child); stole butter from cowherd folks’

houses and ate the same joyously; not just that- You

drank also the poisonous milk of Poothanai also; You

are addressed as KaNNapiraan the One who made the

viLAm pazha tree fall (by throwing the asurA who came

in the guise of a calf by catching its tail and

swirling it against the tree); one who befelled the

trees of Kurundha; one who killed the horse (Kesi) –

one who is our nirvAhakan- by name KaNNan (say

vEdhAthic scholars).

The One who were Varaaham and Vaamanan is this KaNNan.

Since these avathArams have already been dealth with

by AzhwAr in earlier verses- he just summarizes them

in half line- paNdu (Then) Or yEnamAya vaamanaa!

maNNiyuNdu- can be KaNNan Kutti eating the sand; OR

the Lord having swallowed all seven worlds and the

whole prakruthi maNdalam; Since all other events are

related to KaNNan’s it is more appropriate to relate

the same to KaNNan’s eating sand. When He ate the maN

(sand), AzhwAr remembered the Lord taking the maN

(earth) out of troubled waters i.e Varaaha avathAram.

The way You did all those wonders in previous

avathArams are nothing when compared to Your wonders

[Kutti KaNNan’s]- when Poothanai came in guise of a

motherly lady with affection, when the asurA came in

the guise of a calf; or as viLAmpazha tree- they all

get killed by Kutti with effortless ease. Also, when

the asurA comes straight with wide open mouth as in

the case of kEsi horse, he also gets killed.
