Dearest Srivaishnavas,

AzhwAr enjoys Govardhangiri leelA and in connection,

relates few other leelAs as well.

Oh mugil vaNNA! Cloud coloured Lord! (mEga vaNNan

allaiyE). You are the One who turned the Manthara

Mountain upside down in order to churn the same and

stirred the ocean making the waters go upside down.

Not just that; You built a bridge bringing mountainous

rocks (utilizing the services of monkeys) in the

middle of the deep ocean and you sent the arrows to

the destruction of city of lankA – which is surrounded

by tall ramparts on top of Thirkkoota mountain. And

During KrishNAvathAram, You are the One who lifted the

huge Govardhana mountain effortlessly.

Thus the mEgavaNNan (cloud hued Lord) protected the

cattle from mEgam (clouds).

During the prelude to the performance of yagnam for

Devendran, [which cowherd folks used to do every

year], Krishna asked his father as to why these

preparation was all for and what would be the outcome.

Nandhan mentioned that that was for Indran- the demi

god of clouds and rain and the tradition had passed

for generations after generations.

KaNNan asked them.. everyone is bound by Karma. When

people are ordained by Karma, where does Indra come?

We live in forests and cattle are our life and we

depend on them. They are our wealth and let us worship

them, father..

Nandhan agreed and so did everyone. His divine charm

made them agree. So Devendran did not get the

offering- The angered Indran sent Varunan down heavily

on Gokulam so that it would rain torrentially to the

complete destruction of Gokulam and the residents.

There were huge thunder and lightning followed by

continuous rains for days after days. Not only the

houses were destroyed, the food was also getting

spoiled.

All Gopakas took their children and families to

Krishna and prayed to Him for protecting them without

realizing that he was only a small Boy. They had

complete unflinching faith [mahAviswAsam] that He

would save them somehow.

KaNNan- Kutti KaNNan lifted the huge Govardhana

mountain effortlessly with his Hand and asked all of

Gopakas to come underneath the mountain to protect

themselves from the heaviest downpour which was like

the PraLayam itself. For seven days, it rained. All

seven days, he held the mountain, and held aloft

without an iota of strain while the people and the

cattle took refuge there literally under the shadow of

His lotus feet.

Devendran was amazed and puzzled. When he realized

that it was unparalleled Sriman Narayanan who appeared

as Kutti KaNNan he was ashamed of himself and withdrew

– sought KaNNan’s forgiveness.
