Dearest Srivaishnavas,

Description of Vibhava avathArams is just completed by

AzhwAr. When AzhwAr enjoyed KaNNan – dark hued one-

who killed Kamsa, he started longing for seeing and

enjoying His dhivya mangaLa vigraham. In all yugas,

the Lord has different colour of His ThirumEni (Dhivya

mangaLa vigraham) – says PramANam (saasthrAs). AzhwAr

remembered them and describes in this verse.

kruthE ShuklasChathurbAhu: thrEtHAyAm rakthavarOsou;

dhvAparE bhagawaan ShyAm; kalow krishNam thvishaptha

krishNam – etc- says saasthrAs. Due to time factor and

in order to show distinction between them, He shows

Himself in different colours; However for Kaliyuga, He

shows Himself in His true colour i.e. dark colour and

hence KaNNan appeared in that colur which natural to

His form due to His sowlabhyam. Still the world does

not want to see Him as the Lord. He is so near; yet

they don’t see Him- AzhwAr feels bad.

paalineermai semponeermai paasiyin pasumpuRam,

pOlum neermai poRpudai thadatthu vaNdu viNdulaa

neelaneermai yenRivai niRainthakaalam naangumaay,

maalineermai vaiyakam maRaitthathenna neermaiyE?

(44)

In the four yugAs (kaalam naangum) [EmperumAn’s-

Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan’s]- like the nature as

the milk; like the reddish gold; like greenish moss

[paasi]; like the nature of the most beautiful dark

karuneydhal flower found in the cool pond- blue hued

dark one; such wonderful forms and nature (sowseelyam-

accessible nature) – You possess in these YugAs and

have tremendous unbounded limitless affection and

vaathsalyam for Your devotees. Still the world is not

able to see the guNa vishEsham (Your most auspicious

attributes). That is also Your wonder and leelA to

hide the same from the world! What is that quality! –

wonders AzhwAr.

White, red, green and black- that’s not the way what

AzhwAr enlisted. He mentions milk, gold, moss, and

karuneydhal flower objects because He is most

enjoyable and Parama bhOgyam like the sweet milk; most

valuable (invaluable) like the gold; cool and serene

like moss; and most beautiful like the karuneydhal

flower and thus AzhwAr enlists the guNas of beauty,

fragrance, nature, and His sweetness in one stroke and

His ThirumEni is the combination of all of these- says

AzhwAr.

Paasi- moss is not green everywhere- at some places it

is dirty is not green; hence AzhwAr says external

greenish like moss- paasiyin pasum PURAM pOlum..

poRpudai- Gold- most beautiful; and hence good for the

mind.. (manatthukkiniyaan).

Thadatthu- cool; and also pond (hence cool for the

whole Body, heart and spirit)

vaNdu viNdulaa- the flowere where bees flock, drinking

honey and hum joyously; Thus Parama bhAgawathAs

assemble and flock Him singing His praise- which

itself is ParamabhOgyam like Himself.

Thus the tongue, (milk), the touch (pond), the ears

(listening to bees); the eyes (seeing the karuneydhal

flower) the nose (fragrance of His- with the same

flower); He is Sarva gandha; Sarva Rasa: He is the

Greatest personification of enjoyment; Parama bhOgya

SwarUpi; He needs to be enjoyed with all five organs –

enjoys AzhwAr in this wonderful Rupa vailakshaNyam

description.

AzhwAr does not mention niRam (colour); instead He

says – neermai. Hence along with the colour one should

enjoy His other most wonderful qualities;

Vaiyagam maRaitthadhu- Though He shows Himself in such

wonderful forms, attributes and sowlabhyam, still the

world does not see His sowseelyam and His lordship due

to the enormous dhurguNAs of its accrued over the ages

due to our own karma vaasanaas. Thus, He does not let

Himself and His beauty be enjoyed by others and though

they see, they are not able to describe to others as

they forget soon due to karma vasanas. yavanikA mAyA

jaganmOhinI.. is the mopst famous line. It is His

maayai. Thus few are like asurars and are not able to

appreciate His gunAs- worries AzhwAr. Thus when he

mentions that vaiyagam- world- he means only those who

are not able to enjoy Him thus.
