Dearest Srivaishnavas,

Every archA becomes grand to AzhwAr. Hence now enjoys

our Rangan of Sri Rangam- num perumAL- Azhagiya

maNavaaLan…

AzhwAr enjoying ThiruvEmkatam before Rangan reminds us

of PiLLaiThirunaRaiyoor araiyar’s commentary for

Amalanaadhipiraan verse- viraiyaar pozhil

vEnkatavan--- when ThiruppNAzhwAr sang Rangan in

Amalanaadhipiraan, he sang first Venkatam and then

Rangan’s lotus feet. Araiar writes: When one sings in

praise of Him, he needs to sing first the history- He

came from Sri vaikuNtam to Vemkatam and then to Sri

Rangam. [sri vaikuntatthininRum ThirumalaiyailE

thangiaaytthu kOilukku vandhadhu..]

Hence Thirumazhisai AzhwAr follows the same sequence

perhaps- enjoys Sri Uttamur Swamy.

koNdaikoNda kOthaimeethu

thEnulaavu koonikoon,

uNdaikoNda rankavOtti

yuLmakizhntha naathaNnoor,

naNdaiyuNdu naaraipEra

vaaLaipaaya neelamE,

aNdaikoNdu keNdaimEyu

manthaNeera rangamE. (49)

Swami- KaNNan- the one who enjoyed removing the hunch

back of Thrivakrai woman [wearing bee humming most

fragrant flower in her dark hairs] and made her

beautiful; resides in the place of Srirangam – where

long beautiful fishes [getting scared of the bird

cranes that eat the crabs and loiter in the river

banks looking for fishes to eat] jump behind the karu

neydhal flower with no fear (by hiding itself from

cranes behind the flower) in the cool river flowing

besides the temple;

AzhwAr enjoyed in 47th verse- kaarodotthamEbi KaNNan-

the dark cloud hued KaNNan- and searches for Him in

divya Desams in another form.. and says- His place is

here in Srirangam alone. (arangamE).

When Kannan went to kill Kamsa, there was a woman who

was selling sandal (and she was hunch backed old

woman) and she enjoyed KaNNan’s divine beauty and

devotedly and affectionately offered KaNNan with lots

of sandal (whichw was actually meant perhaps for the

king Kamsa). KaNNan pleased with her love – without

knowing what He can pay her back for the devoteion and

sandal, she hugged her from behind, holding her chin

with one hand, placing His fingers (toes) on her feet

and lifted her whole body firm to straighten her

body.. what a bhAgyam! What an anubhavam she would

have enjoyed and had! She became beautiful…naturally.

Thus the Lord accepts a small offering from the

devotees and considers as the huge one and shows His

kruthagnathai (gratitude?) for that little minutest

action as if it was a grand one.. Kruthagna

saarvabhouman.. Such most merciful DayAkaran- is here

in front of us Lord Sriya: Pathi Sri RanganAyakI

samEtha SrI RanganAthan. (num perumAL)..

The crane – Kamsan attempts to eat the crabs-

yaadhavars-

The lovely fish- Thirvakrai woman getting scared of

kamsa as she sells sandal to him daily;

Jumps and Hides behind the karuneydhal flower- gets

behind the blue hued dark most beautiful KaNNan and

saty there hiding herself without fear..

What a comparison! Only Acharyas can enjoy!

Also commentators enjoy this as RamavathAra hunch back

woman incident.. But that incident does not go well

here. Also it was described in earlier verse.

Crane -eating crabs – should AzhwAr describe this?-

one may ask. Periyavaacchaan Pillai comments

wonderfully in his swApadEsam(inner esoteric meaning):

Naarai- crane- is the ahankAra mamakAram (I and mine)

that eat away the samsaaris- crabs.

The fishes that get sacred of such ahankAra mamakAram

ans stay away from the same (Crane) are the

bhAgawathAs who have hidden behind EmperumAN the

karuneydhal flower. Great anubhavam.

Let that grand commentary be there of course and let

us enjoy.. Sri Uttamur Swamy adds: In Dhivya Desam,

all beings are Nithya sUris who have come to enjoy His

presence and hence how can AzhwAr talk about eating

crabs and looking fish etc..=- some may argue.. The

answer is AzhwArs are also great poets (kavis) and

hence when they enjoy the beautiful chill reiver

flowing they need to describe the scenery and so,

there is no harm in describing the nature and enjoy..

That is also beautiful and bhOgyam only for reciters.

Thirumazhisai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam
