SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah:

Dearest Srivaishnavas,

 

After enjoying Kudanthai SaarngapaaNi as Rama, AzhwAr

now enjoys Him as KaNNan in this verse.

 

marankedan^a danthadarththu

maththayaanai maththakaththu,

urankedappu daiththor_kompo

siththukantha vuththamaa,

thurankamvaaypi LanthumaNNa

Lanthapaatha, vEthiyar

varankoLakku danthaiyuLki

danthamaalu mallaiyE? (58)

 

Oh PurushOtthamA! The one who went crawling in between

the trees and breaking the twin trees (of marudha

maram); fighting with the strong majestic elephant

Kuvalayaapeetam effortlessly, alleviating its pain on

its mound (matthagam), hitting on the elephant and

breaking one of its tuskers to destroy the same You

rejoiced.

 

After their morning bath on MathurA, KaNNan and

Balarama strolled unhurriedly towards the palace

[ground] where they were supposed to go and meet

Kamsa. At the entrance, they were stopped by the

mighty elephant Kuvalayapeetam. Krishna asked the

mahout to remove the elephant from the way. Instead,

the mahout urged the elephant to trample upon the boys

and kill them.

 

The elephant moved forward and made to coil its trunk

around Krishna. Krishna however slipped between the

legs of the maddened beast and with a jump, caught its

tail with both hands. He pulled it and then whirled it

round and round, with the mahout on it, and made them

dizzy. He leapt forward and seized the animal trunk.

It fell down with a mighty thud. Krishna ripped out

the elephant’s tuskers and with one blow killed both

the elephant and its mahout. They entered holding the

bleeding tusk in their hands.

 

The people were at once attracted the divine glow on

their faces. They were thrilled beyond measure that

the elephant had been killed.

 

That most valorous One - KaNNan is none other than the

Lord ArA amudhan of Kudanthai... - enjoys AzhwAr..
