Guest guest
SrI: SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah: Dearest Srivaishnavas, Thus in the last verse- the difficulties involved in bhakti yoga were described. bahUnAm janmanAm anthE jnAnavAn mAm prapadhyathE- bhakti yoga needs to be performed for many births and to do that the good karma yoga [and jnAna yoga- though not necessary as a sequel- it is sufficient to proceed from Karma yoga straight to bhakti yoga] needs to be completed] AzhwAr describes here about the difficulty in fine tuning the sense organs by performing jnAna yoga [the visualization of jeevathma-resulting in enjoyment of the Self- or Kaivalyam and] to qualify oneself conducive to bhakti yoga]. punpulava zhiyadaiththa rakkilachchi Nnaiseythu, nanpulava zhithiRanthu NYaanan^aRchu dar_koLee_i, enpileLki nenchuruki yuLkaninthe zhunthathOr, anpilanRi yaazhiyaanai yaavar_kaaNa vallarE? (76) Closing the gates of five senses - that go to lowliest objects of desires; and sealing with hard wax [of firm mind; the transitory nature and lowliness of the desires]; opening the mind with the way towards satvishayam; with jnAna yoga (performing jnAna yoga) extol and realize the glories of JeevAthman and its attribute of dharma bhUtha jnAnam in its entirety; thinning down the bones, melting the heart, refining the mind - will arise the devotion and affection, preethi (for self realization and thence after- seeing the Lord Chakra paaNi). There is absolutely no other person capable of that in any other path... YAMA- Practicing truth, restraint, detachment, celibacy and avoiding thieving . NIYAMA :Reciting Vedas daily, bodily purity, mental purity, observing vows (VRATA) and doing penance (TAPAS) PRANAYAMA:Breath Control PRATYAAKARA: Dissociating the senses from the sense objects. DHAARANA :Becoming one with God through meditation. AASANA : Sitting in YOgic postures with concentration of mind. dhYAANA :Have no other thoughts -A ceaseless meditative flow. SAMAADHI :Integrative concentration in union with God. Thus prANAyAmam, prathyAharam et al should be performed to close the gates of senses and prevent them from going towards the objects of pleasure. After that, firmly seal them with a clear focused mind and the knowledge on transitoriness of the desires and their lowliness. So, one has to think of the dhOshams again and again of the objects of desire and the sensual pleasures thereby slowly developing detachments to them. And then with a pure mind and heart, open the path to realise the gories of jeevathma and know the same.. Also there is another commentary that it relates to Bhagavath vishayam and get to know the kalyANA guNAs of Sriman Narayanan and the ParanjyOthi.. It is also acceptable- SrI UttamU Swamy adds. Since the verse is related to jnAna yoga, jeevathma is inferred; If it is read as having described about bhati yoga, then Swarupa, Roopa, Guna, vibhUthi vishayams of Sriman Narayana can be inferred. The bones to thin down- Not the body- [Meaning: the fleshes will go away; the body will just look like the skeleton]; with the performance of jnAna yoga (or bhakti yoga). Thinking and focusing on the Lord Chakra paaNi- the heart melts enjoying the glories, kalyANa guNAs of unparalleled Sriman Narayanan. Due to His grace all will happen [and even jeevathma saathshaathkaaram (seeing the jeevathman and enjoying as kaivalyam happens due to His Grace] and it can result only with His grace. However there will be a great delayed process. Thus, unless one undergoes all this arduous process, it can not happen and there is no other way in accordance with saasthrAs. Refer to Sri Satakopan Swamin’s mammoth continuing series on Thiruvaheendrapuram kaimkaryam- wherein a couple of days ago- he had sent on this same subject [from Geethartha sangraham] – reproduced below for ready reference and enjoyment of the AzhwAr pAsuram to be read in conjunction with this: aarAtha selvamum aar uyir kaaNum arum payanum pErAthu tann kazhal keezh amarum peru vAzhcchikaLum sOrAthu uhanthavar thUmathi koLvathum seyvanavum tErA Visayanukkut-ThirunAraNan seppinanE ---GeethArtha Samgraham : Paasuram 9. (Meaning ): Lord KrishNA , the direct incarnation of SrIman NaarAyaNan, performed upadEsam to the confused Arjunan about the doctrines to be grasped and the practises to be observed by the four different adhikAris ( qualified ones) who desire either undiminishing wealth or the enjoyment arising from the direct visualization of the Self or the parama purushArthan (the Supreme Goal) of living forever at the sacred feet of the Lord in His Supreme abode (SrI Vaikuntham).
