Dear BhakthAs :

In this posting adiyEn would focus on Acharya RaamanujA's

summary of the FOUR AdhyAyAs ( Chapters) of FOUR PaadhAs

each of which contain various adhikaraNAs ( the complete

argument that covers one issue under discussion and

the conclusions about that issue ). Prior to that , adiyEn will

cover Swamy Desikan's summary of AchArya RaamAnujA's

sangraham of PaadhArTams .

This summary of the 16 paadhAs is known as "Saareeraka adhyAya

PaadhArTa Sangraha: ". There are in total 16 PaadhAs with individual

adhikaraNAs belonging to them .

SWAMY DESIKAN'S SUMMARY OF THE 16 PAADHAAS

******************************************************

Our Swamy Desikan , one of the authorities on Sri BhAshyam

of AchArya RaamAnujA summarizes the content of these 16 Paadhams

in the 19th slOkam of his AdhikaraNa SaarAvaLi :

Srashtaa dEhee Swanishta: Niravadhimahimaa apAstaBhAdha: srithAptha:

KhAthmAdhE: indhriyAdhE: uchitha-janana-kruthsamsruthO tantravAhee

nirdhOshatwAdhiramyO Bahujanapadham svArha-karma-prasAdhya:

pApascchit Brahma-nADi-gathikruth Aadhivahan sAmyadha: cha athra vEdhya:

The Lord ( Brahman , Sriman NaarAyaNan) is described in

the 16 PaadhAs of Sri BhAshyam as :

(1) SrashtA = The Creator of this Universe

(2) dEhee = the Possessor of this world ( sentients and insentients)

as His body (Sareeram) .

(3) Svanishta: = One who has only Himself for His support and

One who does not seek support from any other sources .

(4) Niravadhimahimaa = resplendent with limitless Vaibhavam

and pervading every thing in His Creation .

(5) apAstaBhAdha: = One who can not be denied

(6) SrithAbhdha: = Achyuthan , One who does not let down

any one , who sought Him as refuge & Protection. He is

an unfailing , reliable friend to those aasritha janams

(aNDinOrai tavarAthu Kaappavan).

(7) KhaathmAdhE: = One who is the creator of AakAsam et al

( Moola Prakruthi) and the Jeevans .

(8) IndhriyAdhE: = One who is the Creator of the senses and

the PrANAs as well .

(9) Uchita-Jananakruth SamsruthO tantravaahee = One who is

the controller of the unceasing tides ( movements, gathi) of

SamsAraa .

(10) nirdhOshatvAth adhiramya: = Beautiful because He is untouched by

any dhOshams ( defects, blemishes). An abode of perfection .

(11) Bahu-jana padham = One who is the object (goal) of many kinds of

UpAsanAs( devotional worships) prescribed by the Upanishads .

(12) SvArha-karma-prasAdhya: = One who is pleased with the performance of

the prescribed duties for the Jeevans .

(13) Paapaschith = One who destroys all the sins of the PrapannAs

(14) Brahma-nADi-gathi-kruth = One who leads the liberated Jeevans

through the Brahma NaDi during the time of the falling of the body

( dEhAvasAnam).

(15) Aadhivahan = One who leads the Jeevan further through ArchirAdhi

maargam ( the path of light ) with His AadhivAhAs ( assigned representatives) .

(16) Saamyadha: = One who grants the status of equality with Himself

for the Muktha Jeevans at Sri Vaikuntam to enjoy the BrahmAnandham

with Him and the eternally liberated Jeevans ( nithya sooris) .

Swamy Desikan in his own inimitable style states that Our Lord

has to be understood in this manner (athra vEdhya: ) as saluted by

the 16 PaadhAs of Brahma SutrAs .

Next , we will take up AchArya RaamAnuja's summary of the Four

AdhyAyaas with their 16 PaadhAs that formed the basis of

summary in the 19th slOkam of his AdhikaraNa SaarAvaLi ;

That posting on the summary will serve as the introduction

before we bask under the warmth of the Dheepam of VedAntham

lit for us by AchArya RaamAnujA .
