SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah:

Dearest Srivaishnavas,

ThiruvananthAzhwAn is addressed more popularly as

Seshan or Adhi sEshan. This verse explains the meaning

of this term.

nivaasa sayyaasana paadhukaam sukha

upadhaana varshaathapa vaaraNAdhibhi:

sareera bhEdhaisthava sEshathaam gathai:

yathOchitham sEsha itheerithE janai:

nivaasa- Place- Temple- ThirukkOil.

sayyaa- bed (ThiruppaLLi)

aasana- SimhAsanam [Throne]

paadhuka- ThiruvaDi nilai- Sandals

Amsuka- Peethaambara [silk cloth around the waist]

Upadhaana- Pillow

Varsha Adhapa vaaraNa-Umbrella that prevents from heat

and rain,

Adhibhi: Paadha peetam – foot rest?

yathOchitham- compatible and satisfying to Your heart

thava- to You

sEshathaam- performing kaimkaryam [service] such

various kinds

gathai- to receive to perform such services-

sareera bhEdhai: taking different forms of ThirumEni

[body] matching to the respective kind of kaimkaryam

janai: [by everyone as sEshan]

eerithE- addressed such [AdhisEshan who is described

in the last verse]

Adhi seshan- is most appropriately and suitably

addressed and designated by every devotee as sEsha due

to his performing various kinds of service to the Lord

taking different forms of ThirumEni- to do kaimkaryams

namely, be His residence, couch, seat, Sandals,

raiment, Pillow, and shelter from sun and rain as

umbrella etc…

AnanthAzhwAn is the One who takes the form of temples

where the Lord is gracefully presenting Himself. He is

the seat for the Lord; He is the paadhuka. He is the

silk cloth; He Himself is the Pillow; He is the

Umbrella- Thus he takes different forms of the body to

serve Him. Thus he serves taking different form to

perform ceaseless service at His feet and thus is

addressed as sEshan. sEhsan means servant.

Thus ignoramuses, jnAnis- everyone address him as

sEshan. He is the personification of kaimkaryam.

AdhisEshan is also addressed as ArvaNai, Ananthan,

Aravarasu, thousand headed one, ILaiyaazhwAn et al.

The thousand named Lord is supported by thousand

headed AdhisEshan and he (AdhisEshan) is also known

for his thousands and thousands of fame…for all

kaimkaryams that he performs for the Lord from time

immemorial uninterruptedly. He is the role model for

every Srivaishnava devotee.

This verse is the inspiration from PeyAzhwAr’s

moonRaam ThiruvanthAthi: 53rd pAsuram

senRaal kudaiyaam irundhaal singAsanamaam

ninRaal maravadiyaam neeLkadalul

anRum aNaiyaam poompattaam

pulgum aNaiyaam ThirumaaRku aravu

AdhisEsha, the serpent, is the symbol of Total

dedication and kaimkaryam of a soul to the service of

God [sEsha vrtthi] and as such he serves as Bed, a

couch, paadhukas, and an umbrella, the raiment etc…
