Sri Alavandhaar's SthOthra Rathnam verse-60- You are my father; mother; relation, friend, teacher, wisdom and wealth... The way as well as the Goal!

Sri:

SrimathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah:

 

Dearest Srivaishnavas,

 

Earlier, akinchanan, ananyagathis SaraNya; dayAsidhO!

BandhO! – were uttered by Alavandhaar. Now they are

being elaborated.

 

pithA thvam; mathA thvam; dayithadhanayasthvam;

priyasuhruth

thvamEva, thvam bandhu: kururasi gathicchaasi

jagathaam

tvadheeyas thvad bruthya: thava parijanas

tvadgathiraham

prapannac cha yEvam sathyahamapi thavaivaami hi para:

For all the worlds, You are everything; You are alone

are the Father; Mother; darling son; dearest friend;

close relation; the Acharya who dispels the darkness

of ignorance; - the end that we attain- everything is

thus You and You alone. I am Your eternal servant.

Tvad bruthya: I need to be brought up by You;

Tava parijana: Your servant- Your kinkaran.

Tvad gathi: You are the end and Goal for me.

Prapanna cha: I am also the One who has performed

Saranagathi at Your Lotus Feet.

When such is the case, I am also the goal for You- Am

I not?

 

Had I left You for some other goal, some other

pleasures, some other objectives, some other pursuits,

then You can ignore me; Had I not surrendered at Your

Lotus Feet, You can ignore me and discard me. But I am

not so; hence I am Your goal now and You need to take

me.

 

Ahamapi- api sabdham refers to even if I am full of

blemishes, as I have not other refuge, and no other

qualifications on myself, having surrendered

unconditionally at Your Lotus Feet, You need to bless

me and save me. OR api can also mean- I too (similar

to all my acharyas- ancestors). OR api may also mean-

the body in addition to my AthmA- and hence even after

dhEhaavasaanam, we are Your servants. Thus at all

times, I am your object of saving.

 

In line with the sloka of vapuraadhishu yOPi kOpivaa-

whatever manner had I considered my athmA, please save

that.. So, it may also mean here that even if I

consider that body itself is AThmA wrongly, please

save the same. thEshaam vaicchinnathrushNAnAm

yOgakshEmavahO hari: also can be contemplated here.

 

In Saranagathi Gadya, Sri Ramanujacharya also echoes

the same sentiment:

 

tvamEva mAtA pitA tvameva tvameva bandhuscha

gurustvamEv

tvamEva vidya dravinam tvamEva tvameva sarvam mama

dhEva devaa

 

You are my mother, father, relation, teacher, wisdom

and wealth; You are everything in this world to me, My

Lord!.

 

Swami Desikan mentions in his Sri-Stuthi:

 

mAthA devi! tvamasi bhagavAn vasudeva-ha pithA may

jAtha-ha sOham janani yuvayOr-eka-lakshyam dayAya-hA "

You are my Mother and the Lord Vaasudeva my Father….
