Dearest Srivaishnavas

Alavandhaar elaborates his aakinchanyathvam (utter

helplessness). A soul stirring verse- more appropriate

to us!

amaryAdha: Kshudra: chalamadhi: asUyAprasavabhU:

kruthagnO dhurmAni smara paravasO vanchanapara:

nrusamsa: pApishta: kathamahamithO dukkajaladhE :

apArAth uttheerNa: tava paricharEyam charanayO :

[What a soul stirring sloka! One can not but cry

reciting this, (while reciting, imagine

yourself as the hero:-( of the sloka)]

YamunAcharya describes himself as:

amaryAdha: - one who has crossed the bounds of

established rules

Kshudra: - engaging in trivial /worldly

/material/sensual pursuits

chalamadhi:- never steady; (chanchalam), fickle mind

asUyA prasava bhU : Place where jealousy is born

kruthagana: Ungrateful one

dhurmAnee:- ill feelings towards fellow human beings;

smara paravasa : Fallen into the gamut of desires and

sensual impulses

vanchanapara: skilfully deceiving others (at cheating

others )

nrusamsa: - engaging in violent acts

paapishta: ( Incorrigible sinner - mahA paapi

Everyone- be from higher caste or lower caste- be they

literate or illiterate; be they jnAnis or ajnAnis-

they need to think of themselves as above listed

qualities housed in him- as there is none who is

perfect… except Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan.

Even if one does not do fully in accordance with

saasthrAs, if he has the compassion to all beings

equally, ahimSa, etc.. [the eight good qualities – the

Athma guNAs- Ahimsa, sense control, kindliness to all

beings, forbearance, Jnana, penance, contemplation,

truthfulness are the eight 'mental' flowers.], then

there is a chance for brahmaprApthi says Gowthama

dharma sUthra. Instead, I have ten bad qualities. Here

the mind, speech, body – everything is included. The

fruits for these – is immeasurable sorrows and appears

like a deep ocean of suffering. There does not appear

any shore; nor there is any way to stay afloat?

I need to jump up only to the sky as that is only way

out. That is not possible for me. I mentioned

nimajaaami- lift me-. But where is the hand? I am not

aable to even raise my hand above waters. I am not

even able to raise and elevate myself to come to the

water surface. The prakrithi- spreads everywhere in

all eight directions. The only boundary is the

Paramapadham’s virajA nadhi.

With all my dhOshams as enlisted above, how ca I

reach? Only You being Saranaagatha vaathsalyan- need

to save me. When will I even be saved and be able tp

perform kaimkaryam at Your Lotus feet? In spite of

being born from great vamsam (lineage), I am falling

down and down and immersed in samsaaric ocean. How?

How will I be able to utter Your name even?

One may ask: How does Alavandhaar have all these bad

qualities as enlisted by him in this verse? It is

meant for him; It is meant for us… Everyone who

recites should think that it is his qualities. If

everyone things, it is meant for that particular swami

and not for me, where is redemption?

Once Sri Parasara Bhattar had promised to do something

for a fellow Srivaishnava and forgot completely about

it- it appears. And Swamy Bhattar used to recite this

particular verse everyday with full of anubhavam and

empathy in front of Sri Ranganathan Sannidhi..

The person to whom Bhattar had promised happened to be

there behind Bhattar during one such day and after

Bhattar completed his rendering this verse beautifully

and full of anubhavam, this Srivaishnavas commented

loudly to another person who was standing nearby that:

All this applies to this Swami perfectly (as he was

not supported or helped by Bhattar as promised).

Bhattar having heard the comments turned to this

commenter… garlanded him with his own golden chain

(removing from his chest) and said, “I have been

reciting this verse for few years. Only today

RanganAthan ackonwleded and accepted adiyEn’s

qualities… through you swami.”. Actullay Bhattar never

had such dhur guNam (bad qualities).

Perhaps Alavandhaar could not perform Sandyavandhanam

at the right time one day… hence he felt guilty and

felt lowly about the same.. [we all never feel guilt

about any transgressions or omissions; instead we even

argue and tend to give excuses / valid reasons as to

why and how our (mis) or inactions are still correct…

]

Thus one needs to cultivate such naichyAnusanthAnam

and pleads to the Lord for saving.. One needs to then

correct himself and tend to in accordance with

saasthrAs. Without even our getting to know that we

have changed, we need to change. It is His anugraham.

If one says, “He is the Lord Sarvagnan; AkilahEya

prathyaneekan- One with no imperfections; kOti Surya

prakAsan; and does mention all this without having the

white umbrella for Him when He comes as uthsava mUrthi

in Uthsvam, It is NOT jnAnam; it is lack of Bhagavadh

prEmai. Then will he never become a devotee. After

clearly establish Supreme Lordship in the king’s

assembly, PeriyAzhwAr feels as a mother and takes pity

on PerumAL; has an apprehension that people will cast

their evil eyes on Him; That is Bhagavad prEmai.

Also the above qualities- even if they are not with us

(probably now), one may even consider them in the

overall scheme of all millions of births; Definitely

we would be more than qualified to have them

Alavandhaar ThiruvaDigaLE SaraNam

Namo Narayana
