Dearest Srivaishnavas,

How will I be able to tolerate all transgressions as

enlisted by you with a small excuse of performance of

saranagathi- You may appear to ask oh Lord. But there

is evidence that You have even accepted bigger and

more huge aparAdhams and apachArams and also even much

lower action as an excuse. Here it is:

raghuvara yathabhoosthvam dAdrSO vaayalasya

praNathi ithi dayALur yaccha chaidhyasya krishNa:

prathibhava maparaaddhur muktha saayujyathObhU:

vatha kim apatham Agas thasya thOsthi kshamaayaa: [63]

Oh the zenith of Raghu vamsa! The vamsa (lineage) that

was known for the protection of those who have

surrendered! When the kAkAsura fell on the ground,

[even in other direction] You accepted the same as if

it is Saranagathi at Your Feet and pardoned its

aparAdham then and there. You appeared as if You do

not even know or realise the apachAram committed by

the asurA and most compassionately condoned the

kaakaasuran. What is the reason? You are the sweetest

KaNNan; and on the incorrigible SisupAlan- who was

bent upon committing only apachArams on You

ceaselessly, what is that You granted mOksham to him?

It is all due to Your vaathsalyam and greatest

compassion. For such You, What is the apachAram which

is not or which can not be condoned and pardoned by

Your patience and compassion? [None]

You had sent the asthra (arrow) to kill the kaakaasura

and finally sicne it gave up and failed – falling at

Your feet (not even with an intention of performing

Saranagathi perhaps), You still accepted the same and

just pricked its right eye as a small punishment. What

is the reason for such a compassion? What is the

qualification for the asurA to perform Saranagathi? It

is well known fact that Ragha vamsam is known for

protection of Saranaagathars [those who have

ssurrendered]. The kaakaasura- committed the

unpardonable apachAram of pricking and touching the

breast of SitA PiraaTTi. Still, Your compassion could

forgive the same.

And even worse was SisupAlan. Not for just one birth;

He had been committing apachAram for three consecutive

births. In the earlier birth, he had captured PiraaTTi

and abducted her [rAvaNan] and talked as a lecher. And

in this birth as SisupAlan he wanted to even marry her

[RukmiNi piraaTTi], He talked in such abusive language

in the assembly and talking all names about You [in

such unparliamentarily style –which were even harsh

for people like DhuryOdhanan and his brothers]

He called You for the battle and You sent the divine

chakrA and cut his head off; But, what is the result?

He was granted mOksham upon his demise. Why? Your

compassion. When he was in his infanthood, he had

three eyes and four hands; his grief stricken mother

cried and was shocked; It was announced [from the

skies- as asareeri] that one who is his enemy touches

the child, it would become a normal child. KaNNan

casually touched the baby and immediately the child

became normal, healthy child. His mother knowing that

KaNNan would be his prime enemy and he would kill

SisupAlan in future, she prayed to and requested

KaNNan for forgive him for all his apachArams and be

patient with him. KaNNan mercifully heeded to her

request and You thus pardoned all his apachArams and

also granted Saayujyam.

BUT… I did not commit such monster blunders. And I

also performed Saranagathi as an excuse for Your mercy

and dayA on me. All my paapams would not be equal to

SisupAlan’s.

He was cut off with Your divine chakrA and thus was

given anthimasmruthi about You; Hence all his

apachArams were forgiven and he was granted saajujyam.

SrimatE Gopaladesika MahadesikAya Namaha,

Dearest Sriman Madhavakkannan Swamin,

Thank you very much for a most lucid elaboration of the Anukampa of

Sri Raghava through this magnificent verse of Swami Alavandar.

Adikavi Valmiki waxes eloquent on the compassion of Lord Rama through

the statement " shatamathyAthma vatthaya " . Swami Desikan further

elaborates on this fact that if there is a single characteristic that

describes Lord Rama it is his Daya as evidenced by the Dashavatara

Stotram salutation " karuNA kAkuthstha " . Again, Swami Desikan pays

tribute to the fact that Lord Rama unfailingly comes to the rescue of

those who have surrendered to His Lotus feet through the Dashavatara

Stotram salutation " samrakshaNaIkavrathI " and also through the

MahavIra VaiBhavam salutation " sakruthprapannajana samrakshaNa

dhIkshitha " . Swami Desikan further discusses this in the Daya

shatakam salutations " krupE krupajagaddhithE krupaNajanthu

chinthAmaNE " and " sakrudhavEkshaNAth tath kshaNAth " most poignantly

describing Lord Rama as an ocean of mercy and powerfully conveying

the import of the Rama Charma ShlOkam " sakradhEva prappanAya thava

Asmi ithichayAchathE aBhayam sarvaBhUthEBhyO dhadhAmyEthath vratam

mama " . This is further reflected by the words of Sri Raghava himself

in the Ramayana salutation " rAmOdhvirnAbhiBhAshathE " , which is echoed

by Sri Ramanujacharya in the SharaNagati Gadyam.

Why is Lord Rama so merciful? Swami Desikan answers this through the

Daya shatakam salutation " ramasahacharm kshithou raGhudhurINayanthyA

thvayA " , i.e., the Padhukas (Satari Soori/Swami NammAzhwar) are a

constant companion of Lord Rama. We may remember that the Padhukas

are verily a manifestation of the Lord's Daya and that they combine

the powers of Sri Devi, BhUmi Piratti, and NeeLa Devi. Therefore,

even the greatest sinner is forgiven and becomes privy to the grace

of the Lord. We may recall that Swami Alavandar in a previous verse

describes his good fortune at being associated with the unbroken

chain of foremost Acharyas emanating from the Padhukas (Satari

Soori/Swami NammAzhwar). When one clings to the Padhukas, having

given up all other means of succour, the question of punishment from

the Lord does not arise. SharaNagatas who cling to the Padhuka

immediately become beneficiaries to the munificent grace and

bountiful blessings alone, banishing once and for all any talk of

punishment being meted out to them.

Thanks again for your wonderful posting which sparked these

reflections in adiyen. Of late adiyen had been feeling out of sorts

on account of overwhelming work pressure with absolutely no time for

any Bhagavad Vishayam and Kaimkaryam related activities. However, the

most compassionate mother, Andal, enabled adiyen to read your superb

posting on this day (the first day of Dhanur maasam) bringing great

peace of mind and comfort from the assurance of Lord Rama.
