Guest guest
Sri: Dear Sriman Srinivasan Swamy : You had asked a questrion about Pravarghya and Upaasath as the first and second chapter of BruhadhAraNyaka Upanishad's structure with 8 instead of the traditional six chapters . Pravarghya and Upaasath are associated with Soma Yaagams .Such Yaagams are practised rigorously by Kerala Nambhuthri Brahmins . Some of the Soma Yaagams like Agnishtomam take 12 days to perform and Aheenam et al takes less time to conduct . AgnishtOmam starts with Naandheemukha PuNyAham (First day ) , Deekshai for the Yajamaanan (2nd day ) , Pravarghyam and Upaasath every day . Pravargyam is for cleansing of the environment both in the morning and evening . Upaasath is also an ishtit ritual for cleansing of the environment to offer Havis in the form of aajyam ( ghee with Veda Manthrams) in special altars . Pravargyam is symbolized by the YajamAnA's head and Upaasath , his neck. Agni , Soman and VishNu are the Vedic Gods for whom the Soma Yaagam is done and Pravargyam as well as Upaasath ishti is performed . Elaborate literature is available on the Soma Yaagams at the web site maintained by the Namboothris (http://www.namboothri.com ) . AgnihOthram Sri RaamAnuja TatachAr Swamy of West Mambalam is an authority in conductance of these Soma Yaagams . NamO Veda PurushAya , Daasan , Oppiliappan Koil Varadachari Sadagopan - " R.Srinivasan " <rsri Tuesday, January 11, 2005 5:47 AM Re: [RamanujaMission] Book Review- From The Hindu- Upanishad Commentary- BRIHADARANYAKA Upanishad > Actually it is third to eigth chapters. the first two chapters are > pravarghya, upasath.
