Guest guest
Dear Sriman Parthasarathy Srinivasan : Please accept my sincere best wishes on completion of the First anniversary of Sri Vaishnavism that you have created to serve the Community of VaishNavAs . I have very much enjoyed the articles released there. Please accept this article on the dhivya dEsam of SiRu Puliyoor , specially written for Sri Vaishnavism e-list . adiyEn prays to Sri BhUmi DEvi SamEtha Sri Oppiliappan to bless you with additional Kaimkarya Sri and the growth of the e-list of Sri Vaishnavism that you are moderating . NamO NaarAyaNAya , V.Sadagopan Arul Maa Kadal of Thiru SiRu Puliyoor Dhivya Desam ********************************************************************** After his MangaLAsAsanam of ThErazhundhUr , Thirumagai Mannan arrived at SiRu Puliyoor dhivya dEsam and was totally overcome by the grace & Soundaryam of the Lord reclining on the bed of AdhisEshan . This Baala Sayana Moorthy is also saluted by Thirumangai as Chala Sayanan . There is a Sthala Sayana archai ( Thirukkadanmallai /MahA Bali Puram) . The Lord at SiRu Puliyoor is " Chala Sayanar" , The Cha here is like the CHa in Chathram ( Umbrella) . Why the name "Chala Sayanar" *************************************** An intriguing thought crossed adiyEn's mind . "Chala" is a PadhArTam ( one of the 16 Categories) in the aasthka darsanam of Nyaaya ( " Philosophy of logical realism ) founded by Sage Gauthama . VisishtAdhvaitha has in contrast , two PadArTAs ( Dhravyam and adhravyam) with sub categories among the two . The NyAyaa category of Chala stands for argument infused with Sophistry . The Jeevan argues with the Lord that it is its own Master ( NaaTan) , " aham mE " ( I am my own Lord , Thirumanjana Kattiyam of Lord RanganAtha) with Sophistry . The Jeevan ( Chala svabhAvan) quibbles with the Lord in a state of disputation and forgets its ancient and unalterable relationship as Seshan ( liege/Servant) with its Supreme Master ( Sarva Seshi) . The arguments of the Chala Jeavan with its Lord (Chala NaaTan ) about its " Svatantram " is covered in detail elsewhere ( item 8 in http://www.oppiliappan.org/kattiyam ) . The Jeevan being "chalan " argues its deluded state with impunity and stubbornness that it has svatantram; the Lord of the Jeevan reminds the Jeevan that it is wrong in this beklief and attests it has no Svatantram of its own anfd that Hehas the inalienable and eternal relationship with the Jeevan as its Master . One can speculate with comfort that the name " Chala Sayanan " for the AruL Maa Kadal of SiRu Puliyoor might be connected to Him being the Master of Bhaddha Jeevan that wallows in SamsAram by thinking that " I belong to myself , I am independent " . Due to His infinite compassion , the true owner of the Jeevan directs the suffering Bhaddha Jeevan with one of HIs AchAryans and grants Moksham to the Jeevan and recieves it as a Muktha Jeevan at His Supreme abode after its anushtAnam of SaraNAgathy . Thirumangai performed his MangaLAsAsanam of Lord Chala Saynan with ten exquisite Paasurams ( Periya Thirumozhi Paasurams 7.9.1-10) . Location of the Dhivya dEsam *************************************** This dhivya dEsam is near KollumAngudi in ChOLa dEsam . PerumAL is in the Sayanam pose facing South . His NaacchiyAr has the naamam of Thiru MaamahaL . The VimAnam is revered as Nandha Vardhana VimAnam . Ananatha Saras and Maanasa PushkaraNi are the sacred theertthams . He is prathyaksham to Sage VyAsa and the PulikkAl Munivar ( VyAgra Paadhar ) . The name for the dhivya dEsam ( SiRu PuliyUr)arose from the Lord's special anugraham to PulikkAl Munivar . The Ten Paasurams of Kaliyan on Chala Sayanan *************************************************************** In his ten Paasurams of Thirumangai AzhwAr , AzhwAr instructs us to worship the Lord of this dhivya dEsam with the purity of Manas , Speech ( Vaak) and body ( kaayam) . ThrikaraNa parisuddhi is recommended by Kaliyan as ParOpadEsam . In the ninth paasuram about the Lord of the Dhivya dEsam , Thirumangai performs complete MangaLAsAsanam about the names of the PerumAl , ThAyAr , dhivya dEsam : " Thru MaamahaL maruvum SiRu Puliyoor chalasayantthu Arumaa KadalamudhE " . He visualizes the Lord as the nectar that arose from a rare and gigantic ocean and with the SubhAsrayam that is enjoyed immensely by His dEvi , ThirumAmahaL . The aru (rare) maa ( gigantic) kadal (Ocean) is the roopam of ParavAsu dEvan ; the Lord of this dhivya dEsam arose as a nectar from that rare and huge ocean of Sri Vaikunta NaaTan ( Para VaasudEvan) . Azhwar delights in the enjoyment of this nectar at SiRu Puliyoor and acknowledges that the Lord's sacrd feet are his UpAyam and UpEyam ( means and goal) . Kalyan's Periya Thirumozhi: 7.9.1 ********************************************* In the first Paasuram , Kaliyan invites us to worship the Lord of SiRu Puliyoor , who resides in his heart lotus to chase away the stealthy habits of their minds . Sri UthtamUr Swamy points out that Kaliyan has in mind the Veda Vaakyams : " stEnam mana: , anrutha-vaadhini vaak " ( Mind is deceitful and the speech comes up with falsehood) . As an AchAryan , Kaliyan instructs us to worship the Lord of this dhivya dEsam with aarjavam (Straightforwardness , rectitude and honesty) . He asks us to infuse ManO-Vaak-Kaayam with aarjavam and then approach the Lord for worship . He assures us that worship of the Lord's sacred feet in that mode will destroy the propensity for thievery of the mind ( manatthin thiruttuttanam viLLum ): " KaLLam manam viLLum vahai karuthik-kazhal Thozhuveer ". The whole paasuram takes this form : KaLLam manam viLLum vahai karuthik-kazhal thozhuveer veLLam muthu paravait-tirai viriya karaiyengum teLLum maNi thihazhum SirupuliyUr chalasayanat- tuLLum yenathu uLLatthuLLum uRaivAraiyuLLeerE In the first line , Thirumangai revealed the upAyam for tackling the stealthiness of the mind . In the second line and part of the third line , Kaliyan describes the richness of this dhivya dEsam : " VeLLam muthu paravait-tirai viriya karai yengum teLLum MaNi thihazhum Siru Puliyoor " . Kaliyan sees amazing testament to the abundant richness of this dhivya dEsam . The assembly of the noble gems brought ashore by the swift waves of the old ocean were illuminating the dhivya desam with their brilliant lustre and serving as a rathna dheepam for the Chala Sayana NaaTan , the Lord of SiRu Puliyoor ( MaNi thihazhum SiRu Puliyoor Chala sayanatthuLLum) . The same Lord illuminated by the lustre of the noble gems is seen inside his Hrudhaya Kamalam by Kaliyan . Kaliyan asks us to worship the Lord's sacred feet and approach them for protection from our deceitful minds and "anrutha Vaak ".
