Thiruvinnarappan's Paasurams :Additional Reflections on Periya Thirumozhi 6.2.7( Part XV )

In the last posting , we experienced the moving plea of

Thirumangai mannan , when he pleaded with the Lord

to take note of the changes in him and to protect him against

the cheshtais of the PanchEndhriyams that land him in the various

narakams .

 

Thirumangai mannan appealed to the Lord in His role as HrusheekEsan

( Controller of Hrusheekams/Indhriyams) to save him from the tyranny of

the PanchEndhriyams . Oh ThiruviNNagarappa ! You are the Kudi

(aadharam ) to all . These PanchEndhriyams have taken turns

( kooRaa Eivar) to torture me ; some times they try to tempt me one at

a time .Other times , they join together and gang up on me. Anyway ,

their attacks are relentless . The end result is deeper and deeper

immersion in SamsAric mud without no escape in sight .

 

These panchEndhriyams are the land lord of this sinking , stinking

samsaric mud ( Kudi-vittavar ) and position me there as a tenant .

adiyEn can not trust them to do any good and therefore , adiyEn

has developed VairAgyam against Raaga-dhvEshams and have rushed

to Your ThiruvadivAram now ( adiyEnai aaRAvemm narahatthu idak-

karuthi kooRA vanthu kumaikka kudivittavarai tERAthu Unn-adainthEn ,

ThiruviNNagar MeyavanE ) . Kudivittavr are the PanchEndhriyams .

The one who has no faith in them as beneficiaries is adiyEn ( tERAthu

niRpavan adiyEn ) . They jostle me and kick me around as a foot ball

( Vanthu kumaikkirArkaL ) . These five vyakthis (entities) grabbed me

and stomped me , kicked me around , knocked me off my feet

and placed me in meeLaa-naraham .

 

adiyEn fought them by throwing the sword of VivEkam that you have

blessed us with and developed VairAgyam . Before that resolute act ,

adiyEn romped along with them happily and enjoyed the poison of

samsAra bhOghams as though they were nectar . adiyEn has now

spurned these bhOgams as totally destructive and reached Your

dhivya dEsam and am prostrating before You .

 

Thirumangai Mannan is an AchAryan and his upadEsams have been

echoed by the AchAryAs , who followed him . Their moving prayers

for relief from the horrors of PanchEndhriyam are equally moving .

Let us reflect today on Swamy Desikan's own prayers for freedom

from the bheethi (fear) caused by the PanchEndhriyams as decribed

by him in his SrI Sookthi of Abheethi Sthavam :

 

Oh Lord ! The AchAryas sent by You have described You as " Sakruth praNatha

rakshaNa praTitha samvidha Samvidha: " ( One who has taken a vow before

the worlds to protect any one who has prostrated before You and sought

Your protection ) . Please save me from the bheethi caused by

the PanchEndhriyams . adiyEn has mitha buddhi ( of insignificant

intellect = siRRaRivinan ) . adiyEn has huge ignorance (ajn~Anaam)

as my abundant wealth ( BahuLa mOha bhAjan ) .Hence adiyEn

is overcome by dEhAthma Brahamam . adiyEn thinks of me as a Svatantra

purushan and my Manas -speech and body engage in vipareetha kaaryams

while being influenced by the thriguNams of Satthvam-Rajas and Tamas .

 

GuNEsa ! VishNO ! HarE ! JanArdhana ! Thriyuga NaaTa ! NaarAyaNa !

ThiruviNNagarappA ! You have declared in Your SaasthrAs that any

BhAgavathan , who stays at Your dhivya dEsam controlling his Indhriyams

and meditates on You is well protected by You ( VaSee ThvadhEka niyatha

aaSaya: , yathra dEsE kadhAchidhapi vardhathE , tasya kudhascchana bheethi:

na bhavEth ). For them , who are thriguNa langana udhyOgina: ( who want to

cross over samsAram and wish to gain Moksham ) , You serve as an ever

wakeful rakshakan ( Jaagarookan) . You have vowed to extend Your hand

and lift them out of the samsAric mud ( Kara grahaNa DhIkshithan ) .

 

ThiruviNNagarappA ! the terrors of Garbha Vaasam and Naraka Vaasam

from the sins under the goading of PanchEndhriyams driven by the three

guNams are too fearsome to describe by speech (Naraka garbha vaasa

aadhikam vakthumapi na sakyathE ) . If you do not take pity on adiyEN ,

who else is there to protect me from SamsAra Bheethi ? ( Thvam na

dayishyasE chEth , iTtham anukampithaa Ka: ? ) . Who else is there that

deserves Your compassion more than adiyEn ( Thvadh anukampaneeya:

cha Ka : ? ) .

 

Jagath PathE ( Oh Lord of the Universe ) ! Dayitha AakAsa nagareesa

( Oh Lord ,who is fond of ThiruviNNagaram as Your nithya vaasasthalam ) !

adiyEn is standing before You full of fears about the sorrow-causing and

tough to defeat vishaya sukhams that interferes with Your anubhavam

( aham vishAdha-bahuLAnAm dhurjayAth vishaya vargathO Thvadh

anubhUthi vicchEdha: BibhEmi ) .You are well known for Your inability

to turn down a SaraNAgathan even if he had offended You with all

his sins under the influence of the thriguNams ( BhavAn SaraNAgatha

bhanga bheetha : ) .Therefore , You should come to adiyEn's rescue

without fail . Please assure adiyEn of abheethi from the five indhriyams

and their reign of terror ( Bhaya Vimukthi = freedom from fear) ! Bhayam

samaya ( Please remove adiyEn's fears ). Sriyam BahuLaya ( please grow

the VaishNava SrI ) ! Sriya vipaksham unmoolaya ( please destroy down

to the roots adiyEn's enemies , who try to throw me into narakams ) .

adiyEn has placed the responsibility of aathma rakshA bharam at Your

sacred feet ( Thvayi ayam bhara: ithi samarpitha: ) . Please use Your

five weapons ( PanchAyudhams) to chase away forcefully in a second ,

the viparItha chEshtais of the PanchEndhriyams ( Rakshakai: panchabhi:

aayudhai : kshaNAth prasabham kshapaya ) .

 

Oh ThiruviNNagarappA ! oh PrakrushDa guNaka ( Oh the abode of lofty

and auspicious attributes ) ! Goaded by BhUmi PirAtti ( Vasudhayaa

samdhukshitha: ) , May Thou use Your ocean of DayA in a powerful

manner to bless me with the freedom from fear caused by

the PanchEndhriyams ( Vasudhayaa Samdhkshitha: prayuktha karuNA

udhadhi : Sva-sakthyA Svayam prasamaya ) ! PrabhO ! PrathipaDAn samaya

( Oh Lord! Please control and subjugate adiyEn's enemies/PanchEndhriyams

and bless me with freedomfrom fear ) ! If You have the sankalpam to protect

anyone , there is no cause for fear anymore for them ( yathra Thvayi

ririkshathi , tathra prathibhayam kimchith na: ) .
