Arul Maa Kadal of Thiru SiRu Puliyoor Dhivya Desam *******************************************************************

In the previous Paasuram , Kaliyan asked the Lord to reveal

where He resides primarily and form the answers concluded that

the Lord of SiRu PuliyUr's preferred residence is the mind of His

BhAgavathAs.

In this Paasuram , Kaliyan qualifies himself to approach the Lord

directly after saluting His BhagavathAs and gains the fitness to approach

Him for the granting of the boon of PiRavAmai ( Moksham) :

mayyAr vari neelam malark-kaNNAr vittittu

uyyvAn Unn kazhalEthozhuthu yezhuvEn, kiLi madavAr

sevvAy mozhi payilum SiRu PuliyUr Chala Sayanatthu

eivAy aravaNaimEl uRai Amalaa ! aruLAyE ! ----Periya Thirumozhi: 7.9.8

(Meaning ) : SiRu PuliyUr is the dhivya dEsam , where the pet parrots

learn Your AshtOttharams and Sahasra Naamaas from the alluring

red mouths of charming ladies devoted to You . At Your dhivya dEsam ,

where the parrots train themselves to perform Your Naama Sankeerthanam ,

You are resting comfortably on Your soft bed of the five-headed AadhisEshan .

Oh Blemishless Lord ( Amalaa ) ! Please bless adiyEn to reject the temptations of

young women with beautiful and long eyes lined with colleriyum . May adiyEn's

mind be totally free from thoughts about them and concentrate always on

Your sacred feet to gain Moksha sukham . Please bless adiyEn with this boon .

Special Notes :

********************

" The words " KiLi Madavaar " has also been interpreted as parrot-like

beautiful women . " SevvAi Mozhi payilum SiRu PuliyUr " has been

interpreted as SiRu PuliyUr , where beautiful ladies learn the dhivya

prabhandham of Swamy NammAzhwAr's ThiruvAi Mozhi . The implication

is that the ladies are the reciters of the Tamizh Vedham at this dhivya dEsam .

AzhwAr's prayer to the Lord of SiRu PuliyUr is " Unn KazhalE thozhuthu

yezhuvEn . AruLAi " . Oh AruL Maa Kadal NidhiyE ! adiyEn longs for

ujjevanam from worshipping Your sacred feet alone . Please remove any

impediments that will come my way and bless me to recieve the fruits of

the requested boon . What are the major impeediments ? They are :

The temptations in the form of charming , young women with long eyes

reminding one of the beauty of NeelOthpalam ( Neelam malar KaNNAr )

and having minute red lines inside those eyes and decorated outside with

black colleyrium ( MyAr vari nelam malar KaNNAr) . AzhwAr declares that

he is of firm determination to abandon any thoughts about such tempting

eyes ( Manam vittittu) and seek only the Lord's sacred feet for his ujjevanam

from the samsAric sufferings and to gain Moksha sukham with His

anugraham ( Unn KazhakalL thozhuthu yezhuvEn ! aruLAi ! ) . Your

Thiruvadis alone are my means ( UpAyam ) and goal ( prApyam ) for

Moksham .

Follwing the foot steps of ThiruppANa AzhwAr , Kaliyan

addresses the Lord of SiRu PuliyUr as " Amalaa ! " . ThiruppANar

declared that his eyes will not see anything other than Sri RanganAthan

in his first Paasuram starting with the word , "Amalan "

and ending up with the last paasuram , " MaRRonRinaik kANAvE " :

" Amalan AadhipirAN ---- yennuLLam kavarnthAnai

ANDarkOn ANiyarangan yenn amudhinaik--

kaNDa kaNkaL MaRRonRinaik--kANAvE "

In this Paauram , ThiruppANar confesses : " My eyes , which have

seen my nectar in the form of lovely RanganAtha , who has the color of

the blue clouds , whose mouth ate butter , when He became a cowherd,

who stole my heart , who is the ruler over all the worlds and their

residents -- THOSE EYES OF MINE WILL NOT SEE ANYTHING ELSE " .

Why would not ThiruppANar's eyes see any thing else ? It is

because every thing else other than the Lord has some dhOsham

( blemish= malam ) . He is the only One without any dhOsham ( Amalan ).

In the very first Pasuram of the Prabhandham of ThiruppANar , he

addresses the Lord as " Amalan AadhipirAn adiyArkku yennai aatpaduttha

Vimalan , ViNNavarkkOn " . Saranga Muni has lifted ThiruppANar from

his shoulders and placed the AzhwAr down right in front of Lord RanganAtha .

The AzhwAr , who had closed his eyes all along opened his eyes to see

the Lord and the first word that came to his mind on darsanam of the Lord's

Thiruvadi was : "Amalan " ( the ever pure One ) . The first gaze of the AzhwAr

was on the sacred feet of Lord RanganAtha (" Lashmee BhUmyO:kara-sarasijai: laaLitham PaadhAmbhOjam " ) . Those Kamala ThiruppAdhams

were saluted first by AzhwAr . In his eulogy of the Lord at Srirangam ,

ThiruppANar used four words , which have more or less the same meaning :

Amalan , Vimalan , Nimalan and Ninmalan . All mean that the Lord has no Malam

or blemish . Sri D. Ramaswamy IyengAr describes this amalathvam as

" Purity in excelsis . It is " PavithrANAm Pavithram " in the words of BheeshmA .

That great purity is reflected in HIs capacity to make the impure (us) pure " .

Kaliyan sees the Baala RanganAthan at SiRu PuliyUr and is moved to

describe Him as Amalan in the way in which ThiruppANar saluted Him

at Srirangam .

Kaliyan has clebrated the importance of adiyArs ( BhagavathAs) of

the Lord in previous paasurams on SiRu PuliyUr . Those streams of

thought can be connected to another epithet used by ThiruppANar

in his prabhandham : " adiyArkennai aatpadutthiya Vimalan " . Here ,

Sri D.Ramaswamy IyengAr comments : " Lord RanganAthan is the Vimalan ,

who is so unselfish as not to appropraite me and my servitude to Himself

alone , but made me a servant of the true and faithful devotees of His

( adiyArkaL ) . He made me a slave for His devotees ( adiyArkkennai

aatpadutthiya Vimalan ) . The Seshathvam or servitude of a chetana

should not stop with the Lord but must extend to His devotees . This is

known as PurushArTa Kaashtai in VaishNavism . A true VaishNavite

hankers to serve not only His Lord , but as a corrolary to his

Bhagavath Kinkarathvam , he wants to serve a devotee's devotee's

devotee ( seven stages down) ; vide KulasEkara AzhwAr's Mukunhda

Maala passage : " Thvath parichAraka Bhruthya bhruthyasya---"

and Swamy NammAzhwAr's ThiruvAimozhi passage : " adiyAr adiyAr

tamakkadiyAr --- " . Bhagavatha sEshathvam is celebrated here .

In the next Paasuram (Ninth) , Thirumangai declares : " UnathadiyE

SaraNAmE " ( Your ThiruvadikaLE SaraNam , UpAya UpEyam ) .
