*********************************************************

Down below spreads the expansive dhivya dEsam of Thiruvaheendhrapuram ,

where Sri HemAbhja Valli SamEtha Sri DevanAthan presides . Down below

flows the Garuda Nadhi created by the beak of Garudan to bring out water

from the earth to quench Lord DevanAthan's thirst during a far off time .

The year is 1298 C.E. A Young man of twenty years of age is sitting under

a holy AswatthA tree performing Garuda Manthra Japam following he UpadEsam

on that powerful manthram form his AchAryan , AthrEya RaamAnujar of ThUppul/

Kaanchi known also as AppuLLAr . The young scholar's name is Sri

VenkatanAthan .His AchAryan was blessing his sishyan from Sri Vaikuntam

to which he had ascended recently . Suddenly , there is a loud and majestic

flutter of wings in the sky . A golden divine being with the fragrance of

VedAs

is flying towards Oushadha giri ; that form descends at the foot of the

Aswattha

Vruksham , where young Sri VenkatanAthan was performing Garuda Manthra

Japam . That golden divine being was Pakshi Raajan Himself , who has

descended

to initiate Sri VenkatanAthan personally into Sri HayagrIva Manthram

so that Sri VenkatanAthan can become Swamy VedAntha Desikan .

The young BrahmachAri scholar opened his eyes and saw

the immense and beautiful VedAthmA VihagEswaran . He realized that

he has achieved Garuda manthra siddhi and fell at the sacred feet of

VynathEyar ( Periya Thiruvadi) . Garudan embraced the scholar and

initiated him (VenaktanAthan ) into the powerful HayagrIva Manthram

and blessed the young scholar with an archA mUrthy of Yoga HayagrIvan

for future aarAdhanam .

The birth of Sri HayagrIva SthOthram

**************************************

Now , Garudan flew off as fast as He had appeared . Sri VenkatanAthan

prostrated before that archA mUrthy of HayagrIvan and considered

himself as a Dhanyan ; He started immediately reciting Sri HayagrIva

Manthram with deep bhakthi . Few hours later , the air was filled with

Hala Hala dhvani indicating the arrival of Lord HayagrIvan Himself

at the site on Oushadha Giri , where Sri VenkatanAthan was repeating

the manthram of Lord Hayagrivan while meditating on the Lord

of that manthram . The warm , bright, white effulgence around him made

VenaktanAthan come out of his deep meditation and to his wonderment ,

the Lord of sakala VidhyAs was standing before him to bless him .

Instantly , out of the lips of the young scholar from Kaanchi flowed

the divine eulogy of Lord HayagrIvan in Anushtup Metre:

Jn~Anandha-mayam dEvam Nirmala-sphaDikAkruthim

AadhAram sarva vidhyAnAm Hayagreevam upaasmahe

This first slOkam was followed by the next two slOkams set in

the charming SikhRiNee metre ; After these three slOkams in

Anushtup and SikhariNee metres , the fourth one arose in

the Saalinee metre . This is the one & only slOkam in Saalinee metre

among the 862 SlOkams of Swamy Desikan's 28 SthOthrams .

The next 27 slOkams ( 5 to 31) cast themselves in the UpajAthi

metre . The 32nd slOkam took its shape in MandhAkrAntha metre

and the last slOkam flowed in the Aryaa metre and VenkatanAtha

Kavi introduced himself formally as the author of this holy sthOthram

on Lord Hayagreevan , his dheekshA Guru , who blessed him with

His divine LaalAmrutham :

VaagarTa-siddhi-hEthO: paDatha

HaygrIva Samsthuthim bhakthyA

Kavi tArkika kesariNA

VenkatanATEna VirachithAmEthAm

Additional comments on the slOkams of Sri HayagrIva SthOthram

********************************************************************

All of these events took place rapidly . Sri VenakatanAtha Kavi

felt immensely blessed to have recieved the paripoorNa anugraham of

Lord HayagrIvan . He had seen the Lord that appeared before him

at His own free will (Svathassiddham ) in the form of the blemishless ,

gigantic sphatika gem ( Suddha sPhaDika maNi bhUbhruth prathipaDam) .

He had heard the Hala-hala sabdham arising from the throat of the Lord

as the quintessence of the dhvani of the three VedAs ( ananathai:

thrayyanthai : anuvihitha hEshA halahalam ) . That neighing sound of

Haya Vadhanan has the power of destroying the sins of all on hearing

( hatha asEsha avadhyam hEshA halahalam ) . The Lord with the Dhivya tEjas

(maha:) was eulogized thus by Swamy Desikan in the 2nd slOkam set in

SikhariNiee metre .

The divine halahala sound was still in the ears of Swamy Desikan .

He was still under the grip of the SikhariNee metre . He continued

with the next slOkam ( 3rd one) in the same metre and elaborated on

the nature of the halahala dhvani . Swamy Desikan identified that sacred

dhvani as the essence of Saama , Yajur and Rg Vedams and having an abode

in those three VedAs ( SamAhAra SaamnAm , RuchAm prathipadham ,

YajushAm dhAma: ). That Hala-hala dhvani had the power to remove

all obstacles that stood in the way of acquisition of dhivya Jn~Anam

( PrathyUhAnAm laya: ) . That hala-hala dhvani was like the array of

waves in the ocean of Jn~Anam and destroyed the sound and fury of

the haughty para matha vaadhis ( dharpa kshubhyath kaTaka kula

kOlAhalam) . Swamy Desikan prayed for the Hayavadhana hEshA halahalam

to destroy the darkness caused by the Kutarka vaadhis and Kudhrushti

Matha Vaadhins ( kOlAhala bhavam anthardhvAntham harathu ) .

In the next slOkam ( 4th slOkam ) , Swamy Desikan shifted the gathi

of his mind from SikhariNee to Saalinee metre to house an ardent prayer for

Lord Hayagreevan's ajn~Anam destroying , effulgent ThirumEni to be before

his mind's eye always : " Vakthre vEdhAn bhAthu mE VaajivakthrA ,

VaagheesAkhyA VaasudEvasaya Moorthi : " . Swamy identified the Moorthy

of Lord HayagrIvan as that of Para VaasudEvan in Sri Vaikuntam .

He saluted that form of the Lord as the One performing upadEsams

on the VedAs and acting as the effulgent dawn to chase away

the dark night of nescience .

In the fifth slOkam , Swamy Desikan performed his SaraNAgathy

to the blemishless ( Visuddha ) , totally effilgent Jn~Ana Svaroopan

( Vij~nAna ghana svaroopam ) . With great MahA ViswAsam about

the DayA of the Lord known for His vow to confer visEsha Jn~Anam

on those who sought His refuge, Swamy Desikan performed his

unconditional surrender : " DayA nidhim dEhabhruthAm SaraNyam ,

Devam Hayagreevam aham PrapdhyE " .

From the 5th to the 31st slOkam , Swamy Desikan used the same upajAthi

metre to praise the Vaibhavam of Lord Hayagreevan and His unfailing

anugraha Balam to His UpAsakAs .

In the 32nd SlOkam set in MadhAkraanthA metre that he will use later for

the slOkams of Bhagavadh DhyAna sOpAnam to describe the dhivya avayava

Soundharyamm of the Lord of Srirangam , Swamy Desikan blessed us with

the DhyAna SlOkam of the ever-resplendent (amlAna SrI: ) Lord of Vaak

adorning the disc , the conch , a book and JnA~nOpadEsa mudhrai

in His four hands , while being seated on a most beatiful white lotus

flower . Swamy Desikan prayed to this blemishless Lord of VidhyAs

( anagha mahimA Vaaghadheesan) to drench him with the suddha sathva ,

nectarine rays and to appear before him always ( amlAna SrI : anagha

mahimA Vaagadheesa: amrutha viSadhai: amsubhi: Maam plAvayan

maanasE aavirbhUyAth ) .

In the final slOkam in the AaryA metre , Swamy Desikan asked us to recite

his HayagrIva SthOthram composed in front of Lord HayagrIvan with Bhakthi .

He revealed that he phalan of PaarAyaNam of the HayagrIva SthOthram

would be the Lord's anugraham to gain mastery over speech and

its meaning (VaagarTa siddhi )and PaanDithyam in all VidhyAs .
