Dearest all,

 

Let us continue to enjoy ThirumangaiAzhwAr’s Periya

Thirumozhi. Today’s verse is Periya Thirumozhi 1.8.5

 

kalayaami kalidhvamsam kavim lOkadhivaakaram

yaSya kObi: prakaaSaabir aavidhyam niHatham thama:

 

I meditate on the Poet, who is like the Sun for the

whole world, to destroy the darkness of ignorance

(a~jnAnam) with his word and who destroys the Kali

dhOsham.

 

vaNkaiyaanavuNarkkunNaayagan vELviyilsenRumaaNiyaay,

maNkaiyaaliranNdhaan maraamaramEzhumeydhavalatthinaan,

eNkaiyaanimayatthuLLaan iruNYchOlaimEviyavembiraan,

thiNkaimmaathuyaitheertthavan

thiruvEngkadamadainNeNYchamE! 1.8.5

 

The One who appeared as the young Brahmachari dwarf

boy and begged mahAbhali with His small Hands (for the

whole universe ultimately)- the One who appeared as

Sri Raman and sent the arrow through seven trees

(saala vruksham) at a stretch- the One who lives in

Thirumaaliru~nchOlai- the One removed the sorrow of

GajEndran elephant and granted mOksham to the animal-

is showing Himself at ThiruvEmkatam. Oh mind! Reach

there.

 

vaN kaiyaan- the strong armed Mahaabhali or the king

of strong armed asurAs; Mahaabhali’s audhaaryam was so

much that he is revered as vaNkaiyaan; That’s why the

Lord did not wish to take avathAram and fight to get

back the three worlds. Instead, he wished to utilise

his audhaaryam and retrieve the worlds to give back to

Devendran.

 

He went begging for three measures of “maN” [the

earth].. He Himself is the Lord of the entire

Universe; all worlds; Lord of everyone and everything.

He owns them; It is His property and He went begging

for the three measures of His Feet from Bhali… what a

sowseelyam.. Anything He does for the sake of His

asrithars… devendran pleaded to the Lord Upendran

[sriman Narayanan] and thus He took this Vaamana

avathAram for Devendran’s sake.

 

Vyakhyana Chakravartthi Sri Periyavacchan Pillai adds

here: Like the cotton that changes its form and shape

and transforms itself or is changed by others- into

twelve types, the maN (meaning the matter- or

prakruthi) is also changed by the Lord different forms

or types.

 

The cotton forms: seed; rolled into the ball; gets to

thread form; woven; formed into a cloth; washed;

ironed; worn and then torn… etc..

 

The matter undergoes such forms or changes [by the

Lord]:

 

The matter is in subtle form inside Him; He brings it

out; It takes into mahath and the elements; Also the

seven worlds (upper and below); He houses jeevans into

these five elements as their sareeram; He swallows the

matter during dissolution; and spits out during

evolution; He lifts the Universe on His teeth

[eeayiRRu] (during Varaaha avathAram) and keeps in

vayiRu [during praLayam].

 

Such a Master who owns this universe goes to beg from

this Bhali for three measures. What a sowseelyam! –

enjoys Sri Periya Vacchaan PiLLai.

 

He saved the strong armed Gajendran [The One who the

string trunk] from the crocodile.. and granted mOksham

to the elephant. The elephant is reported to have

fought with the crocodile for 1000 years and was also

supported by its relatives and family members. But all

in vain and finally yelled for the Primordial Chief

[Adhi moolamae] He rushed to save the elephant

immediately and never asked as to why it did not call

for His help before? Also He felt guilty that He did

not come earlier and let the elephant be saved. That

sorrow [kuRai] of the Lord is now resolved as He is

ever ready at ThiruvEnkatam standing for our sake and

waiting so that he can rush immediately.

 

He is the Lord of Attapubhuyakaram divya desam {lord

with eight hands]; He is the Lord of

Thirumaaliruncholai; And he is ThiruvEnkatamudaiyaan.
