Dearest all,

 

Let us continue to enjoy Thirumangai AzhwAr’s Periya

Thirumozhi.

 

kalayaami kalidhvamsam kavim lOkadhivaakaram

yaSya kObi: prakaaSaabir aavidhyam niHatham thama:

 

I meditate on the Poet, who is like the Sun for the

whole world, to destroy the darkness of ignorance

(a~jnAnam) with his word and who destroys the Kali

dhOsham.

thuppaa! nNinnadiyE thodarnNdhEtthavumkiRkinRilEn,

cheppaarthiNvaraisoozh thiruvEngkadamaamalai, en

appaa! vanNdhadainNdhEn adiyEnaiyaatkoNdaruLE.

Oh Lord of ThiruvEmkatam, where tall huge mountains

are like ramparts for TirumalA! I have suffered

terribly for having committed incorrigible sins; I am

even ashamed and have no strength even to praise

Your Feet even. Oh Lord! the One who is capable of

protecting the whole Universe! (thuppA!) Now, My

Father! adiyEn has reached You. Please save me and

take me over to You as Your eternal servant.

 

AzhwAr addresses the Lord as endearing Father.. The

One who is the Father of the whole Universe- enthai-

My Father..

 

He is unparalleled Father- OppAril appan! Even for

that Rudran, and his father BrahmA- He is

incomprehensible and His glories beyond anybody’s

ability to understand. Those who do not understand

Vedic truth, Vedantha only will say and wrongly

interpret saying, thrimUrthys are equal to each other

and all three of them are one and the same. He is the

in-dweller (the antharyaami roopam in) of Sivan and

Brahmaa. He is sarvaantahraami. You are

paravaasudEva, who has taken vyooha avathArams and who

themselves have acted through BrhamA, Sivan and His

own self Vishnu- for the three functionalities as

trio- out of His own sowlabhyam! He is the essence of

praNavam and the three aksharas are like those vyUha

avathArams. Is there anyway can one get mOksham

without His dayA-without being devoted to only Him?

 

[Let us enjoy the term appA- used herein by AzhwAr-

Sri Sadagopan Swamin writes: Among all births , the

birth called Jn~Anap piRavi resulting from the

blessings of Moola Manthram as Mother and one's

AchAryan as the Father providing hat " BrahmOpadEsam "

elevates the role of parents, who are endearingly

called ammA /ambhA/aaryAmbhA ( the most merciful ) and

appA/appan (the most sacred ) .

 

aaryA is the term for a very revered one and the term

AchAryA might be interpreted as AchArEna aarya : , or

anushtAnEna prasiddha aarya :In old formal Sanskrit ,

when a revered one ( mahaneeya or pUjaneeya ) arrives

at your home ,you prostrate before them and invite

them to sit ( aasana parigrahENa alankarOthu imam

pradEsam Aarya : ) .

 

The connection to all these nomenclature can be found

in Divya Prabhandhams , when Thirumangai and

NammAzhwAr address the Lord in their SaraNAgathi

Paasurams .Examples are :

The sum of it all is that one's father revered by

Vedam as " pithru dEvO bhava " is deservedly addressed

as " appA , aNNA , tanthai , appan , aNNal , Aaryan et

al " to indicate the reverence for givng us the JN~Anap

piRavi . In the days past , a son never sat in front

of his father .He always stood unless asked by his

father and even then at a place below his father's

seat .

 

The exemplary case of Father-AchArya-Son relationship

is that of Kumara VaradAchAr and Swami Sri Desikan

,His father , AchAryan and God…
