Dear BhakthAs of ThiruvengadamudayAn :

 

Before describing the SaaRRumuRai anubhaavam ,

let me add some thing that I forgot to mention earlier .

 

adiyEn forgot to mention some thing unique at Thirumala .

We were waiting to have the ArchAnantara SevA ( Sevai of

the recitation of the AshtOttharam and Sahasra Naamams ).

The queue was positioned right in front of a special Mantapam

close to the Dhvaja Sthambham and Bali Peetam .

 

There was a Kainkarya Parar engaged in BhEri TaaDanam or

beating of the Murasu Vaadhyam , a good sized drum to different

TaaLams .

 

BhEri Vaadhyam has a distinct role to play in DhvajArOhaNam ,

BrahmOthsavam ( to invite dEvAs, ChEtanams for particpation)

and other temple PuRappAdus . Aagamam specifies the Nruttham,

Svaram and TaaLam for the samarpaNam of the BhEri Naadham

for specific Nithya Sooris like Garudan , VishvaksEnar , Lord's

divine weapons , DhwAra PaalakAs , AzhwArs & AchAryAs ,

Aagamams , VaishNava GhOshti , BrahmA , Rudran ,dhig PaalakAs ,

Navagrahams , Time divisions , Yaj~nams (AgnishtOmam , Aswamedham

et al) , Kula Parvathams , Seven rivers , Dhivya dEsams , Vaasthu NaaTan

and KshEthra Paalan , Eight MahA Sarpams , VidhyA devAs . All are invited

to join in the BrahmOthsavam thru coded ( appropriate Nruttham , Svaram

and TaaLam) .

 

For instance , Garudan is invoked with VishNukrAntha Nruttham ,

Madhyama Svaram and Bali TaaLam . VishvaksEnar is invited with

VishNukrAntha Nruttham , Madhyama Svaram and Khaga TaaLam .

The only difference is the TaaLam for Garudan & VishvaksEnar .

Sarva MangaLa nruttham , SarvathO bhadhra Nruttham , VilAsa Nruttham ,

Chakra MaNDala Nruttham , KadiBhandhana Nruttham and a host of

other Nrutthams are used for different dEvathAs and chEthanams .

The Svarams used are Panchama , Shadjama , Dhaivatha , GaandhAra ,

Rishabha and Madhyama Svarams . Among the 9 TaaLams , Bali , Malla ,

BhaddhAvathA , Rudra TaaLams are used .

 

adiyEn's sister demonstrated these Aagamic rites in a conference

few years ago and played on the TaaLams and the flags to go

with the invocations .

 

It was fascinating to listen to the BhEri TaaDanam on that early morning

as one progressed towards SrivAri's Sannidhi.

 

BhEri Vaadhyam is one of the ashta mangaLams ( 8 symbols of auspiciouness).

The other 7 are : Srivathsam mole , PoorNa ku,bham , Mirror, two fishes

facing

each other , Valampuri Conch , Chakram and Garudan .

 

BhEri that is used during uthsavam and AarAdhana Kaalams has to be

consecrated with aavAhana manhtrams( Om KaalachakrAya Nama: ),

offered arghyam et al , prOkshaNam with VaasudEva PuNyAha theertham

and sanctify the BhEri with additional manthrams like:

 

Om Naadha Brahma svaroopiNyai BhEryai nama: , Om Jagath-Srushti sTithi laya

hEthu bhUthAyai Prakruthyai nama: and Om neem nama: parAya

saBdhatanmAtrAthmanE nama: ithi taaDayEth .

 

The BhERi beating (TaaDanam) is concluded with the Svasthi vachanam :

 

svasthi prajAbhya: paripAlayanthAm nyAyyEna margENa maheem maheesA:

gOBrAhmaNEbhya: Subhamasthu nithyam lOkA: samasthA: SukhinO bhavanthu

 

It was thus a rare interlude to hear the BhEri TaaDanam few days after

the BramOthsavam was concluded as a part of the morning ArchanAs .
